MacGregor Ranch is proud to once again partner with the Larimer Conservation District on another important forestry project at our Dry Gulch property, focused on restoring the natural character of the Ponderosa pine forest.
The Purpose:
Reduce wildfire risk while improving biodiversity across the landscape.
Before modern fire suppression, ponderosa forests were far less dense than we see today. Frequent, low-intensity fires naturally thinned trees and maintained open stands with grassy, thriving understories. These forests were more resilient, more diverse, and better adapted to live with fire.
Over time, fire suppression has led to overcrowded conditions, too many trees competing for light and water, limited growth on the forest floor, and heavier fuel loads that can intensify wildfires.
Our Goal:
We want our firefighters and our community safe, so we are emulating what nature once did on its own.
By thoughtfully reducing tree density, we’re creating a mosaic of clustered trees, open spaces, and strategic fire breaks; restoring a balance of sunlight and shade. That diversity of light is key. When more light reaches the forest floor, biodiversity flourishes.
A healthier understory means:
• More pollinators
• More birds and wildlife
• Better edge habitat for raptors and birds of prey
This work strengthens ecological health while also enhancing wildfire resilience for our community and protecting vital water resources.
Through thoughtful stewardship and our partnership with Larimer Conservation District, we’re helping return Dry Gulch to a forest structure closer to what nature intended: open, diverse, and ready to live with fire. 🌲
