! And we can make a real difference by smarter landscape management practices.
Non-poisoned yards are a good place to start because they are earth-friendly and sustainable for several reasons:
- Healthy soil ecosystems sequester more carbon.
- Healthy soil ecosystems promote good plant growth, which cools the air through greater transpiration.
- Healthy soil ecosystems promote good plant growth, which reduces erosion and runoff so nearby waterways are less polluted.
- Heathy soil ecosystems provide nesting places for our native bees, which not only pollinate our flowers and crops, but they also prey on pest insects.
- Healthy above-ground ecosystems support birds and pollinators that may be struggling in the face of climate change.
In addition, non-poisoned landscapes are better for your family, and your pet's health. And, you'll save time and money in a less-managed landscape.

This looks healthy. It’s not.

That bright green St. Augustine lawn stretching down to the canal?
It looks clean. It looks cared for. It looks like the Florida dream.

Traditional turfgrass lawns support almost no native insects, no meaningful bird habitat, and very little soil life. To keep that artificial green color year-round, they rely on:

• Synthetic fertilizer
• Irrigation
• Herbicides & pesticides

And here’s the part most people don’t realize:
When it rains in South Florida, that fertilizer doesn’t stay put.
It washes into storm drains
→ into canals
→ into our rivers
→ into our estuaries.
Stormwater is not treated. It goes straight to the water.
Inland Impact on Florida Coasts

Those excess nutrients fuel algal blooms, cloud the water, and starve out seagrass, the foundation of our coastal ecosystem. The result? Fish kills. Wildlife decline. Murky water where it used to be clear.

A green lawn can quietly contribute to:
• Harmful algal blooms
• Seagrass collapse
• Loss of juvenile fish habitat
• Increased water treatment costs
• Property value decline after major bloom events

And most homeowners have no idea.

There’s a better way.

Native Florida landscapes:
🌱 Require little to no fertilizer
🌱 Slow runoff instead of accelerating it
🌱 Support pollinators and birds
🌱 Strengthen soil instead of depleting it
🌱 Actually belong here

You don’t have to sacrifice beauty to protect our water.

ON THE MOVE: A huge weekend for Fall bird migration expected with 300,000,000 to 400,000,000 million birds migrating south each night according to data via BirdCast. Several varieties of Warblers along with Vireo, Eastern Kingbird, American Redstart and Baltimore Orioles and many more are flocking south!

YOU CAN HELP: Please consider turning OFF or dimming your outside lights. Light pollution can confuse, disorient and harm natural bird migrations. Spread the word!

Cool Autumn weather patterns are triggering the early mass migration. Doppler Radar assists in tracking and estimating bird movement and numbers. These migrations are predominantly nocturnal and are taking place between 1,200 and 2,300 feet and can reach speeds up to 30 mph! Follow along, I’ll share more as we follow this weekend.

Invasive Cane Toads are all over SWFL this breeding season. Experts warn they’re toxic to pets and wildlife, harming the ecosystem.

Why would you risk your pet’s health?

Why would you risk your pet’s health?

Chemically treating your lawn can increase the risk of cancer in pets, especially dogs. Multiple studies have shown a strong link between common lawn chemicals-particularly herbicides like 2,4-D and pesticides-and higher rates of cancers such as malignant lymphoma and bladder cancer in dogs. For example, dogs exposed to treated lawns have been found to have up to a 70% higher risk of developing malignant lymphoma, and some breeds may be up to seven times more likely to develop bladder cancer. Exposure can occur through skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion, and chemicals can linger in grass residues or drift from neighboring yards. To reduce risk, avoid using chemical lawn treatments or opt for pet-safe, organic alternatives

Night-migrating birds, like songbirds and shorebirds, can be disoriented by artificial light at night. Turning off or dimming lights can help them complete their migratory journeys safely. Go from 11pm to 6am through May 30. https://bit.ly/43f4b0a
