Field trip season is just around the corner, and it’s all thanks to our phenomenal members! 🥳

CREW Trust memberships directly support our youth education programs, which bring 800+ elementary students to the CREW trails each year at no cost to the schools! 🌿

With 12 classes signed up for the fall and a completely booked schedule for the spring, there’s never been a better time to support our work! 🎉

As a thank you for supporting these programs, our members receive discounts on public programs as well as access to free Members-Only events during season! 🫶

Oh, to be a bear, out for a sniff and a stroll on the trail! 😭🐾🫶

As the weather cools off and the wildflowers begin to bloom, prime hiking season in Southwest Florida is just around the corner! 🥳

If you’re looking for a hike as relaxing as this black bear’s, stop by one of the CREW preserves for a peaceful stroll! The CREW trails are always free and open everyday from sunrise to sunset! 🌿

Research Update! 🐍🐸🐢

The results of the September herpetofauna (reptiles & amphibians) survey period are in! 👇

Although it rained most nights, the survey was conducted during dry drought conditions, and only one of the 36 array arms had standing water during the sampling period. In previous years, multiple arrays were inundated during the September sampling

In total, 7 frog species, 5 snake species, 2 lizard species, and 1 turtle species were caught and safely released during the survey period. Additionally, though they’re not herps, 21 crayfish also wiggled their way into the traps as a result of the rising water table 🦞

Individuals captured per species:
Amphibians
🐸 89 greenhouse frogs (non-native)
🐸 29 narrowmouth toads
🐸 6 oak toads
🐸 2 leopard frogs
🐸 1 Cuban treefrog (non-native)
🐸 1 green treefrog
🐸 1 squirrel treefrog (rare!)

Reptiles
🦎 47 brown anoles (non-native)
🐢 9 three-striped mud turtles (6 juveniles)
🐍 6 black racers
🐍 5 ringneck snakes
🐍 1 ribbon snake
🐍 1 scarlet snake
🐍 1 red rat/corn snake
🦎 1 southeastern five-lined skink

The final survey period will take place in December, so be sure to check back in for another update later this year! 🥳

Our annual golf tournament is almost two weeks away, but we’re short a few bottles! 😅

While all our team slots are full, we’re still seeking donations of unopened, nice quality spirits, liquors, and wines to fill out the ‘Bottle Bonanza’ fundraising activity during the tournament. Our goal is 80 bottles, and we currently only have 30!

During the Bottle Bonanza, players buy turns putting golf balls across the putting green where bottles are spread out at different distances. If they hit the bottle, they get to keep it! Last year, we raised over $1,000 from this activity, and our players noted it was a fun side quest during the tournament!

If you’re able to donate a bottle, (or a Total Wine/ABC gift card!), we’re happy to pick up your donation at your convenience! Or if you’d prefer to drop off your donation, we can meet at any of our trail locations! To schedule a donation, please email [email protected]

Heads up! The final Corkscrew Watershed Initiative (CWI) public meeting is only one week away! 💧

This meeting will cover the findings of the CWI project and cover the proposed restoration plan for the watershed’s hydrology challenges

Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend and provide feedback either in person or virtually!

And with that, our 2026 summer lecture series comes to an end! 🥳😭

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our final lecture, ‘Nature: Medicine for the Mind.’ 🌻

This special lecture included three mini lectures by three graduate researchers from Dr. Brent Jackson’s Human-Environment Research & Outreach Lab at Florida Gulf Coast University (Florida Gulf Coast University) on the relationship between natural environments and human well-being

Grace Norvell examined the impacts of campus green spaces on mental health, Vania Azevedo investigated the effects of immersive “wet walk” experiences on mental health, and Sarah Shelley explored how individuals who have relocated to Southwest Florida connect with nature, develop a sense of place, and how these experiences relate to environmental stewardship and well-being 🌿

Thank you to our fantastic lecturers, to the Estero Recreation Center for hosting, and to all of our phenomenal attendees for joining our final lecture of the summer! 🥳

We’re pleased to announce that CREW Trust has finalized its Strategic Plan for 2026-30! 🥳

This plan represents the culmination of a year-long study undertaken by an Ad Hoc Committee of trustees, staff and volunteers and supported with input from external stakeholders, partners and allies - no small feat!

In addition to discussing our history and the continued relevancy of the CREW Project, it also summarizes CREW Trust’s six mission areas and details seven broad strategic pillars and associated initiatives 🌿

We are so grateful for the many voices that contributed to this plan, and we can’t wait to begin putting it into action! 🥳
