Happy to be a part of the The Justice Challenge Scholar's visit to South Dakota!

"At Ecdysis Foundation and Blue Dasher Farm, students engaged directly with regenerative research methods used nationwide to quantify the ecological benefits of sustainable agriculture. As one student reflected, 'The producers were treated as people whose experiences and knowledge actually mattered in shaping the research.'"

Happy World Bee Day! 🐝

Fun fact: bees are responsible for pollinating about 1/3 of the food we eat!

Thank you bees!

Have you ever considered what lives beneath the ground you walk over?

Agroecology Specialist and Graduate Student Cassandra Koel gave a presentation on what kinds of tiny organisms live in the soil. She focused on bacteria, fungi, and tiny arthropods like mites and collembola, though there are many others we could have discussed as well.

The microbes and other organisms that live in the soil play a crucial role in nutrient cycling as they decompose decaying organic matter and build the dark, rich topsoil that we all love.

They also make certain nutrients available for plant uptake, as well as increase porosity as they move around, making it easier for roots to grow and water to infiltrate. Having a high diversity of soil microorganisms is important for having a well-balanced system that can best support life above ground.

On Tuesday, we were happy to host a cohort of The Justice Challenge scholars for the Sustainable Agriculture Field Course. We think the farm animals enjoyed the visitors just as much as we did. 😉

Students joined us from South Dakota State University and the Universities of Louisville, Mississippi, Florida, Auburn, Texas A&M, Northern Illinois, and Virginia State as they work to tackle current sustainable agriculture challenges.

Thank you to Olivia Husmann, SDSU Graduate Teaching Assistant and friend of Ecdysis, for connecting us with the course, and to everyone who attended!

Dr. Jonathan Lundgren and the Ecdysis team are featured in the third film of a trilogy. The Groundswell Film premiered yesterday at the Festival de Cannes, and we’re excited for you all to watch it when it releases on Prime Video on June 5. 😃

“Premiering at Cannes brings the story to a global cinematic stage, and the subsequent launch on Prime Video will give viewers all over the world a chance to watch these real-world solutions taking hold.” - Josh Tickell, Groundswell director

Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson narrate and executive producer 'Groundswell,' a documentary on regenerative farming that will premiere at Cannes.

On Mother’s Day weekend, we hosted our second Lost Skills workshop: “Starting Your No-Till Garden Beds.” We explored several methods for starting no-till beds and shared some of the trials and lessons I’ve experienced while implementing them on the farm. We got our hands dirty trying out soil blocking, and attendees brought home tomatoes and basil. We snacked on homemade granola cookies made with our honey and enjoyed elderflower cordial from our elderberries. To top it all off, we built a no-till bed of our own! I hope our attendees come back throughout the season to see their garden grow.

Most of all, it was an amazing time of social connection. The part I always enjoy most is bringing people together at Blue Dasher Farm to experience the beauty and nature that surrounds us here. I hope everyone leaves with something meaningful, whether that’s new ideas, laughter, a sense of community, or simply the joy of spending time among the living creatures and plants on this amazing farm I call home.
