The Longears Safehouse

The Longears Safehouse A registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt equine rescue (EIN # 46-0907101), we specialize in the needs of donkeys, mules, and hinnies.

Please consult our website for info regarding adoption requirements and adoptable equines: longearssafehouse.org We take in donkeys in need mostly from domestic situations, rehabilitate donkeys that have experienced abuse, mishandling or neglect, and adopt out donkeys into suitable homes under an adoption contract. We also sometimes assist with private rescue missions (such as providing trailering

services), provide consultation for donkey owners with questions about training and care, and follow up on our adoptions with any assistance adopters may need.

We have enough fly masks coming our way now, but we need more dewormer to complete spring deworming for all our residents here.

Please take a look at our wish list and consider sending some dewormer our way: https://www.statelinetack.com/pages/rescue/longears-safehouse?utm_campaign=longears-safehouse&utm_medium=Ride-It-Forward&utm_source=External&utm_id=97757_v0_s00_e0_tv2_a1demo0dzn38lt&fbclid=IwY2xjawSVVLBleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEesaaWoFu-yWQdBafmcO6wlF6NJOGRR9UopX5iSCAZ-iU_SlrtiHYP9VhQnUY_aem_eUNpYFXbSHg9v_uKIBO87w

We are honored to be teaming up with the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance on June 27 for the Pride Parade in Santa Fe. We will be bringing Jackson and Jessie and will be leading the parade with representatives of the HRA. We are also planning to have an informational booth at the Plaza during the parade, but there will be no merchandise. (Only informational booths are allowed, no vendors.) Come cheer us on or visit with our volunteers at the Plaza!

Oh no! It's here.

It's fly mask season! And we have only a limited number of fly masks from last year. Can you possibly send us some from any of our wish lists?
Here's our StateLineTack wish list: https://www.statelinetack.com/pages/rescue/longears-safehouse?utm_campaign=longears-safehouse&utm_medium=Ride-It-Forward&utm_source=External

Here's our Chick's Saddlery wish list:

We have the following equines fly-masked for now: Wyatt, Roscoe, Samule, Cash, Pecos Bill, Traveler, Joaquin, Abigail, Chloe, Jessie, Gereon, Trixie, Jack, Kaiko, W***y, and Selma.

We need fly masks for Finnegan, Jackson, Joe, Sheila, Astrid, Pia, Sasha, Marian, Rosy, Luella, Sundance, Seca, Tigger, Pablo, Walter, Charlie, Gizmo, and Luther. (Mina and Petra are not maskable yet, and some of the others will need some more work to get a mask on without force.)

We are hugely grateful for a donation of 4 cute pony-sized fly masks last year, which we can now use for our smallest standard donkey heads (Kaiko, Jack, Trixie, and Chloe). We need one large mini (or small pony) sized mask for Pablo (the regular mini horse sizes are too small for most mini donkeys!). And we need a bunch of Arabian and small to regular-horse-sized masks for most of the others. Marian, who has become a lot more touchable lately, has a smaller head and could probably do with yearling or pony size, and Gizmo needs pony size, too. We need horse-sized masks for Charlie, Jackson, and Tigger, possibly for Finnegan too.

Summer is a busy time with lots of extra chores for fly protection!

✔️The Facts About Screwworm from the American Horse Council

The American Horse Council (AHC) is working to share critical information for horse owners regarding the current New World Screwworm (NWS) infestation recently announced in Texas.

On June 3, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed New World Screwworm in the umbilical area of a calf in Zavala County, Texas. This expansion into the United States is alarming and AHC wants to make sure you know about the potential risks of this parasitic fly to horses.

While this might seem like an overwhelming and scary situation, we’ve dealt with this before and have confidence in current science based strategies. The United States historically was afflicted with Screwworm for hundreds of years before successfully eliminating it from the country in the 1960s using many of the same methods we use now.

We’ve eliminated it before, and have full faith we’ll do it again, but only if all horse owners do their part to stay vigilant and follow state guidelines for animal movement.

‼️ Read the facts here: https://horsecouncil.org/screwworm/

Got a lot done today. Here's Kaiko wearing a fly mask for the first time in her life. She's still a bit uneasy about it, but she'll figure out with time that her eyes will be less teary from the flies that way.
