On May 6th, thousands of schools nationwide and over 75 schools in Connecticut participated in the Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day (WB&R). This year marked the first time that Essex Elementary School (EES) participated in this event organized by the Department of Transportation in Connecticut.

EES invited BFK to attend the event. Of course, we enjoy speaking with students and their parents about bike safety and maintenance. And, BFK provided several helmets to kids too!

Principal David Kitzman said that WB&R went great and hopes that EES will participate for years to come.

BFK participated in the Wethersfield Bicycle Festival yesterday.

BFK received 24 used bicycles from Pedal Power this week. Each bike will have a new lease on life…providing adventures, independence, and in some cases, vital transportation to their new owners.

We appreciate Pedal Power’s continued support and that of others.

Please consider donating your gently used bikes or making a monetary gift so BFK may continue to provide bicycles to people who otherwise could not own a bike.

May is National Bike Month!

Before going on a ride, it’s a great idea to check that your bicycle and gear are in good working order. Why chance having a flat tire or being without water on a hot day?

Maple would like to remind riders to wear a helmet. Please keep in mind helmets are mandatory for children under 16 in Connecticut.

Bikes for Kids is participating in The 6th Annual Bicycles on Main in Old Wethersfield, CT taking place May 1st - May 31st. It’s a fun, creative way to celebrate bicycles during National Bike Month! 🚲

This year, there are over 70 displays to view! Pictured are a few BFK volunteers at our display in front of the former Masonic Temple Building at 245 Main Street.

“In 2026, Bicycles Along Main will partner with America250 CT, encouraging participants to design displays inspired by Connecticut’s four official America250 themes”. Theme details and other event information may be found at the website provided below.

For those who may be interested, there is a Bicycle on Main Community Bicycle Ride scheduled on Sunday, May 3rd. Riders are asked to meet 10:00am at the Keeney Center, 200 Main Street. The family friendly ride around Old Wethersfield will begin at 10:30.

BFK is holding a FREE drawing for a 20” Mongoose fat tire bike with disc brakes!

Fat tires bikes are excellent for trail riding. The wide tires provide a better grip on loose dirt, sand and muddy terrain. You can see how ‘fat’ the tire is compared to a hybrid tire in the second picture.

To be considered, please complete a request form on-line and state 20” FAT TIRE BIKE in the comment section.

A winner will be randomly chosen and contacted on April 15th.

We're hoping for some the luck of the Irish....

BFK is seeking gently used bikes that we can refurbish. We are currently in desperate need of 24 inch bikes. In turn, we gift them to people who may not otherwise be able own one.

Current and former Bikes for Kids (BFK) volunteers, along with community partners, gathered to celebrate Dave Fowler and his decision to retire. BFK began, in 1989, as a grass-roots effort by Chuck Graeb. Dave was approached to take the helm when Chuck passed in 2009, We are grateful for the years of leadership and dedication Dave provided to BFK, and would also like to thank his wife, Lynn, for her support.

Cynthia H. Clegg, President & CEO, and Thayer Talbott, Vice President & COO, of the Community Foundation of Middlesex County presented Bikes for Kids with a donation in recognition of Dave's commitment to BFK.
