At Darrin's Place in Española, healing happens every day. This community-based recovery center provides a safe, structured, and compassionate environment for individuals working to overcome substance use and mental health challenges. Through evidence-based programming, peer support, accountability, and care, clients are given the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
Under the leadership of Director Suzanne Lujan and her dedicated staff, Darrin’s Place has gone above and beyond to support residents in every way possible, emotionally, spiritually, and practically. Their commitment to walking alongside individuals in recovery creates the foundation upon which real transformation can take place.
This meaningful partnership began in 2024 when Darrin’s Place Case Manager, Elijah Meason, CPSW, reached out to us with their vision: to bring literacy support directly to clients in recovery. Their belief that education plays a critical role in long-term recovery laid the groundwork for what has become a powerful and life-changing collaboration.
Since that time, one volunteer has faithfully shown up week after week with a servant’s heart and unwavering dedication: Todd App.
In just two years, Todd has met with over 81 students and provided more than 963 hours of one-on-one support. His impact reaches far beyond tutoring sessions. Todd has worked with clients preparing for their HiSET, studying for their Driver License, strengthening their reading and writing skills, and even exploring creative writing as a form of healing and self-expression.
He has also gently supported clients as they worked to reconnect with their families, helping them draft and edit letters to loved ones and to the courts for visitation purposes. While never offering legal advice, Todd ensures their words are clear, respectful, and heartfelt. For many clients, these letters represent courage, accountability, and the hope of restored relationships.
What makes Todd’s service even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice behind it. Todd commutes 21 miles one way, multiple times per week, to serve at Darrin’s Place and regularly uses his own resources (paper and ink), to ensure clients have what they need. He does this quietly, without recognition, simply because he believes in the power of literacy and second chances.
Todd has a heart for this population. He sees potential where others may only see past mistakes. He understands that education builds confidence, and confidence builds momentum. Through patience, consistency, and compassion, he reminds clients that their stories are not over.
At RAALP, we are deeply grateful, not only for Todd, but for all of our volunteers who give their time and talents to strengthen our community. Partnerships like the one with Darrin’s Place show what is possible when organizations come together with a shared mission: to empower individuals with the skills they need to change their lives.
Because of community support, faithful volunteers, and partners like Suzanne Lujan and her staff, lives are being rebuilt, one lesson, one letter, one step at a time.
Todd App’s 963 hours represent more than time. They represent hope in action.
