The Soo Line Bandits were not 1914 Robin Hoods; They were badmen who robbed a Groos saloon, a Wells drug store, and several isolated Soo Line depots in North Escanaba and Gladstone. Their attempt to escape and the pursuit by determined law officers used just about every mode of transportation then available: automobile, horses, streetcar, train, and even a railroad handcart.

It's a great story, and Peter Strom, a thorough researcher and an engaging storyteller, will present it at the 78th Annual DCHS Dinner Meeting.

You still have six days to reserve your spot. Reservations are required by October. 21. The program and dinner are scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, in the Heirman Center at Bay College. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. The buffet dinner, catered by Matt Wiles, will be served at 6:00, and Mr. Strom will begin his illustrated program at 7:00. Cost is $40 per person.

For reservations or information, call 906-789-6790 or 906-786-0831.

DESPERATE BADMEN AND RESOLUTE LAWMEN: Solving the Soo Line Robberies of 1914

Past society president Peter Strom will present the improbable history of "The Soo Line Bandits" at the 78th Annual DCHS Dinner Meeting on Wednesday, October 28 in the Heirman Center of Bay College.

Reservations are required for the dinner meeting, and the cost is $40 per person. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. The buffet dinner, catered by Matt Wiles, starts at 6:00. Mr. Strom's illustrated presentation starts at 7:00

The story includes armed robberies, shootouts, bloodhounds, a railroad handcar, impressive police work--and a one-armed bandit.

Space is limited, and the registration deadline is October 21. To reserve a spot, call 906-789-6790 or 906-786-0831.

Dr. Russell Magnaghi, history professor emeritus from NMU, will present a history of UP b**rs at our Wednesday, April 15, Winter Outreach Program. Dr. Magnaghi, a distinguished historian with an appreciation of b**r and its history, is the author of a book on the subject that covers b**r from 17th century French fur traders' spruce b**r to 21st century craft brews.

The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Heirman Center at Bay College. The program is without charge and open to the public.

We have rescheduled Karen Lindquist’s program "Escanaba Houses, 1937-1939: a Tour of Escanaba Houses during the Great Depression" for Wednesday, May 6. The March 18 date was canceled when we were buried in almost three feet of snow. What a storm!

We do not have a really good way to notify people about cancelations. On that occasion, the college was shut down, and we could not get to the museum to post on our website or answer telephone calls. (The museum parking lot was not plowed until this past week.) We posted the cancelation the day before the scheduled event on this page, and this is the best place to check. If we have a major storm (oh, please, no!), and schools are closed, check this page or the college’s site for information on program status.
