Help Bring a Refrigerated Outdoor Ice Rink to Escanaba!
Your contribution can help bring this rink to life! Our overall goal is $250,000. We have met our
initial goal of raising $100,000, which makes us eligible for Public Spaces, Community Places
grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). This “Go Fund Me”
type grant, using Patronicity, makes us eligible for a $75,000 matching grant after raising
$75,000 for a total of $150,000. This also includes a bonus for our commitment to accessibility
for all.
Preserving Escanaba’s Ice Skating Tradition
Ice skating has long been a cherished winter pastime in Escanaba, from ice shows and speed
skating to neighborhood rinks and family outings. Unfortunately, warmer winters, rising costs,
and budget cuts have made maintaining natural ice rinks nearly impossible.
A refrigerated outdoor rink offers the perfect solution. With modern technology and our winter
climate, this rink could stay frozen even in temperatures up to 50 degrees, providing a reliable
and consistent skating surface for 5 months of the year, from November through March!
Beyond skating, this venue could inspire new winter events and community gatherings, further
enriching our city’s cold-weather offerings.
The Rink at Ludington Park
The proposed portable rink would be located in Ludington Park, south of the tennis court
parking lot. While smaller than a regulation hockey rink, it will be large enough for public
skating, complete with walls like a hockey rink and ice chilled with refrigeration technology.
• Handicap accessible, allowing us to secure additional funding
• Lit at night with city-installed poles for extended use
• Easily removable at the end of the season in April
Let’s get our kids off the screens and onto the ice! Please consider making a contribution to bring
this incredible community project to life.
