Happy Groundhog Day! This morning Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather. That may not sound too bad here in California, where many of us have experienced unseasonably warm, dry weather recently -- but we send our condolences to the snowy East and Midwest. The CCSO office is closed today as our nation honors the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of courage, nonviolence, equality and justice. This observance is an opportunity for remembrance, education, reflection and celebration — and also, as the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service, an occasion for action, when Americans are encouraged to volunteer to improve their communities. This event calls on citizens to recognize the honor and courage of our nation’s peace officers and show support for the heroes who selflessly serve and protect their communities. Of course, CCSO believes our correctional supervisors and law enforcement colleagues should be celebrated year-round! This is a difficult profession, but please remember there are millions of people who believe in and appreciate the work that you do, and countless lives that are safer because of the sacrifices you make.
