On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa established the Missionaries of Charity. Today, this organization includes over 5,750 members (religious sisters) who agree to uphold vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and "to give wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor."

The sisters of the Missionaries of Charity help refugees, those with mental illness, abandoned children, lepers, people with AIDS, and much more. They run soup kitchens and schools that help people of any religion or social status.

Did you know "The Flintstones" premiered today (September 30) on 1960? It made history as the first animated series given a prime-time slot on television – as well as the first animated sitcom!

The Flintstones went on to become the most financially successful and longest-running network animated TV series for 30 years.

Did you know it was Henry D. Washburn who named Old Faithful geyser at Yellowstone National Park? He gave the geyser its name on September 18, 1870, during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition. He named the geyser after its extremely predictable nature, with eruptions happening approximately every 92 minutes (although periods between eruptions have been documented as short as every 35 minutes or as long as every 120 minutes).

Marco! (Polo!)

That's right, today is Marco Polo's birthday (September 15, 1254). In addition to somehow becoming the namesake of a children's swimming game, Marco Polo was the explorer who traveled through Asia and gave Europe its first glimpse of Asian civilizations. He even met Kublai Khan and was appointed Khan's foreign emissary.
