The first group of colonists to settle Roanoke arrived in the New World on August 17, 1585. Sir Walter Raleigh headed the group with a goal of establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America. The first attempt was established as a military outpost, but was evacuated in 1586 due to lack of supplies.

"The Wizard of Oz" had its Hollywood debut on August 15th at Grauman's Chinese Theater. However, star Judy Garland wasn't present at the Hollywood premiere. She was in New York City at the time preparing for the premiere held there two days later (August 17th) at the Capitol Theatre. Interestingly, the film didn't open nationwide until August 25th!
