Happy Statehood Anniversary, Rhode Island!

Rhode Island became a state on this day (May 29) in 1790. Today, it remains the smallest US state by area, but second-most densely populated after New Jersey.

The colony of Rhode Island was founded by religious refugee Roger Williams. He founded the capital of Providence in 1636 as a place for people to practice their religion without persecution. This sometimes earned it the nickname "Rogue's Island."
