Happy !
Cedar Waxwing tips are actually small appendages composed of a red, waxy secretion called astaxanthin- a carotenoid pigment acquired through their mostly fruit-based diet. These waxy plumage enhancements increase in both quantity and size as the bird ages. They signal age, maturity, and social status to other waxwings, serving a particularly crucial role during courtship and mate selection.

Researchers have found that individuals with more red tips tend to choose other birds with more red tips as mates and these birds nest earlier and raise more offspring than younger waxwings (ie, those with fewer tips).

📸: The bird pictured was off the charts in terms of the number of waxy red tips it had as well as with the extent of the yellow on its tail making it undisputedly an adult male.
