Time to make your reservations for Dinner & A Movie at TREC! A fantastic documentary about birds and the Atlantic flyway, a delicious dinner by Cali's West, and w**es by Mazza Vineyards with a brand ambassador on-site to add to your w**e experience. Plus, a post-film discussion with bird expert, Holley Short, Executive Director, Erie Bird Observatory, to tie it all together on the significance of Presque Isle as part of the Atlantic flyway.

Last year, our first-ever October Big Sit netted 50 species for the day, our May 2026 Big Sit wrapped up with 59 species observed from our perch at Fry’s Landing… Now the question remains, how many species did we record last Saturday? 57? 60?

… 62 SPECIES!! A whopping 62 species were observed during our October 2026 Big Sit!! Thanks to everyone who came out in support of our feathered friends, World Migratory Bird Day, October Big Day, and EBO’s ongoing research and outreach efforts! We’ll drop the ebird checklist in the comments so you can see all the birds we recorded.

This picture perfect parulid regrets to inform you that the Erie Bird Observatory Bird Banding Station at Fry’s Landing, Presque Isle State Park will be **CLOSED** Today, SUNDAY, October 11th due to inclement weather. We look forward to welcoming everyone next weekend, weather permitting.

the Common Yellowthroat was one of the first bird species to be described from the New World- all the way back in 1766! But wait, there’s more! While male Common Yellowthroats like this handsome fella here are monogamous (within the same breeding season), female Common Yellowthroats are far from it and will frequently call in other males for extra-pair copulation. 🤓

EBO will be out at Frys Landing, Presque Isle State Park all day today celebrating all things avian with The Presque Isle Big Sit, bird banding demos, livestreams, and more, oh my!

Today is World Migratory Bird Day and this year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter,” highlights the incredible impact that community science has on understanding & protecting migratory birds.

From backyard birdwatching to coordinated surveys across continents, public participation helps scientists track species distribution, abundance trends, migration timing, and breeding success. These observations are essential for identifying conservation priorities and shaping effective action plans.

Bring a chair and join us any time after 7:30am to chat about bird migration, help spot birds, and make a donation in support of EBO’s ongoing research and outreach efforts.

Located between Perry Monument and Beach 11, look for our large sign by the side of the road.

Imagine being the same size as your thumb and weighing roughly that of a nickel- oh and you also winter in areas where the nighttime windchill can be as low as -40°F. Because Golden-crowned Kinglets (GCKI) do just that!

Latin name meaning "little king," these tiny balls of energy have perfected surviving in subzero temps. In the wintertime, during the day, GCKI never stop moving for more than an estimated 2 SECONDS at a time! This is bc they need to consume 3X their weight in insects EVERY DAY to maintain their internal furnace at 110°F (yes, you read that correctly). And, as for 'insulation, GCKI feathers make up 8% of their body weight- the same as an arctic explorer's clothing!

But perhaps the best adaptation of all— Golden-crowned Kinglets have a single tiny feather covering each of their nostrils (nares). 🤩

Want more fun facts about our feathered friends? Come on down to our Fry’s Landing banding station out on Presque Isle State Park. We’ll be welcoming visitors from 10 to 2 today. Located btwn Perry Monument and Beach 11, look for our large Bird Banding sign by the side of the road.
