Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #10: The Downtown Erie Neighborhood
The Downtown Erie Neighbrohood spans Sassafras to Holland and 5th to 14th. There is a ton of opportunity here to combat a low canopy score and high heat island index.

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #8: The Kingtown Neighborhoods
This small square of the city is mostly residential and yet has collectively low tree access. We would like to see at least one street tree planted per resident here to increase canopy coverage.

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #7: The Franklin Park Neighborhood
Though Franklin Park is an accessible greenspace to this neighborhood, it still has a startlingly low tree canopy coverage score. Through efforts on behalf of the City of Erie and local groups / nonprofits, this area’s canopy coverage could EASILY be bumped up.

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #6: The Lakeside Neighborhood
This strip of land houses the Lakeside cemetery and some out-of-commission industrial buildings. We recommend planting or re-planting trees in place of the abandoned industrial buildings to increase public health.

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #5: The Bay Lights Neighborhood
This neighborhood is a small section of city which includes The Erie Land Lighthouse and is adjacent to Lake Erie. We recommend at least 15% more trees planted here, especially due to proximity to the lake!

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #4: The East Bayfront
This neighborhood includes some bay-front access and lots of transportation outlets. We recommend trees planted here along ports and roadsides to increase carbon sequestering and health. The Bayfront East Side Taskforce, Erie's oldest neighborhood nonprofit, is a frontrunner of the movement to beautify and strengthen the East Bayfront.

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #3: The West Bayfront
In 2014, the revitalization organization Our West Bayfront was created by interested residents and community partners. Among other strategies and improvements, OWB recently implemented a residential street tree program to increase resident access to trees.

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #2: The Frontier Neighborhood
In 1920, the land previously known as "Brown's Farm" was subdivided into residential lots and became the Frontier Neighborhood. Later, in 1951, the City of Erie purchased parcels of land within this area and created Frontier Park, which attributes to much of the neighborhood's tree canopy coverage today!

Welcome to our series of Erie's Tree Report Cards! Entry #1: The Greater Kahkwa Neighborhood
When William Scott moved to Erie in 1844, he began as a simple shipping clerk. In the next 50 years, he gained control of 22,000 miles of railroad, 70,000 acres of coal land, and 2,000 acres of land in Erie County - including the current Greater Kahkwa neighborhood.

Thanks for the perfect graphic, Gardening Tips and Tricks! Mulch around a tree should look like an ACTUAL volcano, with a valley in the middle so no mulch touches the trunk. 🌋 Swipe for an example!
