The outdoors is where Scouts learn to share responsibilities and work as a team. It’s where the skills and lessons from troop meetings come to life with real purpose.

Immersed in nature, Scouts develop a deep appreciation for the natural world and our place within it. The wilderness becomes their classroom—where they study ecology firsthand and put conservation into practice. Scouting has championed environmental stewardship long before it became a trend.

We always leave our campsites better than we found them.

Scouting is more than just adventure—it’s a path to growth. Whether you’re paddling a canoe, climbing a mountain, or carrying your pack down a rugged trail, every challenge builds focus, problem-solving, and resilience.

Out in the wild, Scouts discover confidence by pushing beyond comfort zones—whether it’s facing a snowstorm, navigating a tough trail, or simply learning to trust themselves and their troop.

And along the way, you’ll find something even greater: friendship. There is a room and a place in Scouts for everyone. In Scouting, no one stands alone—you’re part of a team, a family, and a movement.

Every adventure prepares you not just for the next outing, but for life itself. That’s the power of Scouting.

The outdoor experience is vital because it offers challenge and adversity in a controlled setting, giving Scouts the chance to overcome obstacles and grow stronger as a team.

You quickly learn how to build a campfire on a cold night or set up a tent or tarp in the pouring rain. When a piece of gear breaks miles into a backcountry hike, you figure out how to adapt and problem-solve on the spot. These moments build confidence, resilience, and lasting camaraderie.

Many of today’s environmental problems trace back to one thing: disconnection from nature. When we lose touch with the outdoors, we lose the drive to protect it. Just like you care more for a friend than a stranger, you’re more likely to care for nature if you have a relationship with it.

Nature isn’t just good for the planet—it’s good for YOU. Time outside boosts creativity, lowers stress, improves sleep, and keeps our bodies strong. Kids who grow up outdoors? They’re more likely to become lifelong protectors of the environment.

Sadly, nature is disappearing from our culture too—fewer mentions in songs, books, and movies since the 1950s. When nature fades from stories, our connection fades too.

The solution? Step outside. Explore. Reconnect. Protect.

As Scouts, we are entrusted with the care of the great outdoors. Outdoor ethics teaches us how to respect the land, protect the water, and cherish the wild places we explore. We live these values each time we honor the Outdoor Code:

As an American, I will do my best to—
Be clean in my outdoor manners.
Be careful with fire.
Be considerate in the outdoors.
Be conservation-minded.

These are more than words—they are commitments. Every choice we make on the trail, at camp, or beneath the stars shapes the legacy we leave behind. By practicing Leave No Trace, Scouts become leaders in preserving nature so that future generations can discover the same adventures and wonders we enjoy today.

"‘We are not a club or a Sunday school class, but a school of the woods,’ said Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting.

For Scouts, the outdoors is more than a place to explore—it’s a classroom alive with lessons in leadership, resilience, and teamwork. Every adventure is fun with a purpose, shaping character, building strength, and sparking growth that lasts a lifetime.

In Scouting, the best lessons happen under the open sky. With the support of their Scoutmaster and adult leaders, Scouts don’t just hear about adventure—they plan it, lead it, and live it from start to finish. A skill might be introduced at a meeting, but the real learning takes place when Scouts step into the wild and put it into action themselves.

Unplug from screens. Reconnect with adventure.

In Scouting, the outdoors is where growth happens. On the trail or in a canoe, Scouts discover strength they didn’t know they had and learn skills that build true self-reliance. Working together through tough trails, unexpected weather, and nature’s challenges, they grow into leaders with character, confidence, and resilience.

Today, most people spend nearly 90% of their lives indoors. Scouts break that pattern. Every hike, canoe trip, bike ride, or cast of a fishing line builds strength, endurance, and confidence. The benefits of being outside are clear—sunshine fuels us, adventure challenges us, and nature restores us. More than ever, young people need the chance to unplug, step into the wild, and discover the power of outdoor adventure.
