For more than 12 years, Urban University has been offering opportunities for students to learn hospitality, culinary arts, and baking skills. As students complete these courses, they earn stars for their apron, which is awarded after their third session—a symbol of their hard work, growth, and dedication.

A BIG shout out to Miss Susan and our incredible sewing mentors for creating these aprons, Miss Bonnie and Sew Darn Cute for the beautiful embroidery, and Miss Elaine for carefully sewing on each new star. Your time, talent, and generosity help make these moments special for our students.

We are so grateful for our amazing commUUnity and the many people who invest in the lives of our young leaders!

Could not have said it better.
Thank you Diver’s World Scuba Training & Travel for the exceptional opportunity and experience 💛

What an incredible three days!

This week, we had the opportunity to host a group from Erie City Mission’s Urban University program for a unique scuba experience. Students first applied and then went through an interview process to earn their spot in the program. Seven students and five mentors joined us for three days of learning, leadership development, creativity, and adventure.

Throughout the program, students participated in presentations, hands-on activities, crafts, team-building exercises, and leadership development sessions before culminating the experience with their very first scuba dives. Watching these young people challenge themselves, support one another, and discover the underwater world was something truly special.

We were equally impressed by the mentors who dedicate so much of their time and energy to helping guide these students. The future is bright with young leaders like these.

Opportunities like this are only possible because of people who believe in investing in the next generation. This program was offered to these students at no financial cost, only the expectation that they show up and give it their best effort every day.

We’re already excited about doing this again next year!

If you or your business would like to help sponsor the program and allow us to expand its reach, we’d love to talk with you. And if you’re a diver with the appropriate clearances who would like to volunteer your time and talents, please reach out as well.

A special thank you goes out to Heather Morrison Thomas Krahnke and Nicole Tupek for volunteering their time to help make this program possible. Your passion and generosity made a lasting impact on these students.

Thank you to everyone who helped make these three days unforgettable. ❤️🤿

Urban University Sewing & Denim Design students are honored to have their jean bags and quilts featured in the 2026 Bayfront Quilt Fest celebrating the Hands All Around Erie Quilt Guild 40th anniversary. We are also thankful for Miss Susan who has led our sewing courses over the last 8 years and the many members of the guild who mentor our students in this artistic craft and skill. Stop down at the Bayfront Convention Center on Friday (5/30) and Saturday (5/31) to take in these and many other beautiful works of art. See flyer with complete details in photos.
