Erie Alumni Initiative

Erie Alumni Initiative The Erie Alumni Initiative was established to help fund projects and strengthen the ties between alumni, CUSD #101, and the Erie, Kansas community.

Roger Ashcraft (class of 1955) and Buddy Stark (class of 1986) joined forces in 2013 to establish fundraising efforts for special projects to benefit the Erie and Neosho County community. The fund is the Erie Alumni Initiative. Nancy Womeldorff Calkins (class of 1966), Jennifer McCoy Harmon (class of 1990) and Dan Rose (class of 1993) have been helping keep the initiative moving forward. In the fa

ll of 2013 a postcard was mailed to alumni whose names were listed on the all-school alumni list. Since 2013, several donations from alumni and residents have been submitted to the fund and a portion of the money has been donated to projects happening in the community. Interested alumni and residents who have not yet donated and wish to be a part of the initiative can send in tax exempt donations to:

THE ERIE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. At the bottom of the check note it for ERIE ALUMNI INITIATIVE. Mail to : Mike Page, Erie Bank of Commerce, 318 South Main, Erie, Kansas 66733. The Erie Alumni Initiative will soon be showing appreciation of all donors with a recognition of donor names submitted to the Erie Record. The initial priority project the fund was eager to help with was the City of Erie Comprehensive Park Plan which includes refurbishing the swimming pool, new park and restroom facilities, new RV park and the Dorris Dinosaurs --- Erie Dinosaur Park, multi-use amphitheater park, walking trails and upgraded technology for the CUSD #101 students. To date, the fund has made donations to the Erie Dinosaur Park, youth train, and the joint City of Erie/CUSD #101 GIS-GPS technology projects, which includes field data collection and mapping for the City's utilities, and eventual high school student technology development projects.

Reminds me of last week's trash service. Service is delayed for MLK Day. No, wait. Forget that. Will work on MLK Day so pickup will be on the regular day. Oops. Bad weather arrived. Change of plans --- Service is delayed again. Then local person posts conflicting information received from their Commissioner saying there is NO delay. Then Public Information Officer posts that there IS a delay. WHAT?? I finally called in and asked what day they would pick up our trash. Ended up being delayed one day.

After initially saying that mail delivery in Kansas and Missouri would be suspended Wednesday the U.S. Postal Service said that service will be normal. Some areas of the upper Midwest will still be affected. On Twitter, people were concerned for carriers.

A few years ... several years ... quite awhile ago LOL Gordon, I didn't remember that you went on a Navy cruise for a week!

From the March 24, 2016 issue of The Erie Record:

EHS STUDENTS RANK HIGH AT SCIENCE FAIRS -- Four science fair projects were taken to the Miami, Okla., Science Fair at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. This was a very large fair, reports Arthur West, Erie High School science instructor, with students from southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri and five Oklahoma counties in attendance.

Gordon McKinnie entered his Astrophotography project and took top honors for Erie. He was awarded the first place medalist award with a superior ribbon in astronomy. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration awarded McKinnie a Certificate of Merit for his astronomy photography project. The highest award going to a boy in the fair that Gordon was eligible to win was a week's cruise with the Navy. This honor also went to Gordon. The Navy will fly him to and from a naval base. He will spend time on board naval surface ships as well as a day's cruise on a submarine.
