Take the AHEC Scholars Summer Challenge!

Summer is a great time to make progress toward your AHEC Scholars didactic hours. PA AHEC Scholars are invited to participate in the Scholars Summer Challenge for a chance to win a gift card while completing meaningful AHEC activities.

To complete the challenge, Scholars must complete five total AHEC activities by August 15, 2026:

(1) in-person AHEC activity

(4) on-demand AHEC activities

Scholars may use the Summer Challenge checklist to track completed activities and should write the name of each activity on the appropriate line.

Want extra raffle entries?
Post about your AHEC Scholar activity on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn, tag PA AHEC, and take a screenshot of your post. Submit the screenshot along with your completed checklist to receive extra entries.

Scholars who complete the challenge by the deadline will be entered into a raffle to win:

(1) $250 gift card, (4) $100 gift cards, (6) $50 gift cards

Scholars are encouraged to reach out to their regional AHEC Center to learn more about current and upcoming opportunities and possible travel support.

Take a close look at the data: while nearly 26% of Pennsylvanians live in rural counties, only about 10% of the state's primary care physicians practice in these communities. This means over a quarter of our state's population relies on a fraction of its healthcare workforce, resulting in longer travel times, delayed preventative care, and strained local clinics.

At NW PA AHEC, this graph isn't just data to us—it's our roadmap. We are actively working to close this gap by creating a sustainable healthcare pipeline. By introducing students to rural clinical rotations and supporting local health professionals, we’re changing these numbers from the ground up.

It’s a well-known trend in healthcare: men are significantly less likely to schedule routine doctor visits than women, often waiting until a minor health issue becomes too big to ignore.

But staying healthy isn't about waiting for something to go wrong. Getting an annual checkup is the easiest way to stay ahead of things like high blood pressure, cholesterol spikes, or high blood sugar—issues that usually don't have obvious symptoms early on.

Take a few minutes this month to prioritize your longevity and schedule that routine appointment. And if there’s a man in your life who has been putting it off, consider this a gentle reminder to help him get it on the calendar. 🩺

Big congratulations are in order for Autumn Peterson! 🎉

Autumn graduated from Slippery Rock University's Physician Assistant Program this past May, and we couldn't be prouder to have had her as an AHEC Scholar. She’s hitting the ground running and starting her career as a PA-C in urgent care, serving the rural community of Titusville, PA.

You don’t need a medical degree to support someone going through a mental health challenge. Just like traditional first aid, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) gives you the basic, actionable tools to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health or substance use crises.

In our communities, having everyday people—teachers, neighbors, coworkers, and leaders—trained in MHFA means help is available long before a situation becomes an emergency.
