Brief History:

The Radio Association of Erie (RAE) was formed over 60 years ago by a radio enthusiast called Frank Dawson Bliley. It was his intent to form a group of indi

viduals interested in the development and advancement of two-way communications. After his death, his family at his request donated a large sum of money to the RAE. The Federal Communications Commission call sign of W3GV was also reissued to the club in remembrance of the founder. Over the years the club has become affiliated with a few amateur radio organizations and programs. One such organizations is the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). The ARRL is a governing non-profit organization that supports the efforts of amateur radio operators. The club has been recognized by the ARRL for providing training sessions, testing sessions, public service event support, etc. Two programs that the club supports are ARES-RACES and SKYWARN. The ARES-RACES program is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide emergency communication in times of need. The SKYWARN program is sponsored by the National Weather Service to assist in the collection and reporting of weather conditions, both during and after severe weather. Our Goals:

1. Furthering the interests of amateur radio both within the hobby and the community.

2. Providing emergency communications to local non-profit organizations for various local events.

3. Providing the National Weather Service and Erie County EMA with trained and qualified spotters for Erie County ARES-SKYWARN.

4. Continuing and extending the amateur’s proven ability to contribute to the enhancement of the radio art.

5. Enhance international goodwill through better communications between various societies and cultures.

6. Expand the resources of trained amateur radio operators, technicians, and electronic experts.

7. Cooperate with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA), Local EMA & Public Safety Officials, and the American Red Cross to provide fixed and mobile emergency communications in times of need and disaster.

Who says ham radio meetings are dull affairs? We commenced ours with a visit from our local fire company.

Apparently our pellet stove was emitting sparks through the exhaust. This concerned one of our neighbors, prompting them to contact the fire department.

Unfortunately, they had to force open our door. Luckily, that was the extent of the damage.

The W3GV clubhouse lost it's power and internet after a storm produced 45-50 mph gusts. It took out a tree, approximately 50 ft tall, near the clubhouse. The tree, about 8 inches in diameter, missed the 80ft tower guy wire by 2 inches and fell within 1 ft of the radio igloo. Unfortunately, it pulled the power line off a pole and broke the neutral conductor. The Spectrum line was pulled down and internet box was ripped off the wall. Penelec and Spectrum made the storm damaged repairs the next day and even credit us for the down time.

On Saturday October 11th and Sunday October 12th, operators Kevin KE3V, Jerry W2FD, Jim N9AJV and Frank KB3NAT rack up 197,000 points and made a clean sweep in the 2025 PA QSO Party!

It started days before with a tower climb by Frank KB3NAT and his ground crew Jerry W2FD and Jim N9AJV. They replaced the rope on the 80 meter dipole and repaired its balun. It has a good VSWR of 1.17 at 3.84 MHz. We made a lot of contacts on that antenna. It helped us make a clean sweep of all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. A good crock pot of chili, crackers and Folgers coffee were on hand. 73, Frank KB3NAT
