Wow!

“These are the days counters live for…” and so Erie Bird Observatory Morning Flight Monitor, Jason Bojczyk, begins his report of yesterday’s RECORD-SHATTERING Broad-winged Hawk flight.

Stationed atop the Tom Ridge Center’s observation tower and over the course of 13 hours, he counted 67,099 individuals across 52 species and welcomed 98 (human) visitors. In the course of A SINGLE HOUR — 20,005 Broad-wingeds were tallied (!!) — in one hour! 🤯

For more eyewitness reactions as well as to read Jason’s full report, be sure to head on over to the EBO blog corner: https://www.eriebirdobservatory.org/ebo-blog/broadwing-bonanza

Spring is here, Let’s go Birding! 🪶🔭

Just 2 days until our 7pm Zoom program, when Mary Birdsong fills us in on the federally-endangered Piping Plovers that nested at Presque Isle State Park, PA last summer.

Mary gives a hint about what we'll learn: "With the loss of our pioneer plover, Jerry, and his mate Eve, along with the arrival of new and mysterious plovers, egg rescues and a nest move, the season proved to be challenging but still rewarding."

Check our website on Friday morning, the 16th, for the meeting link: www.presqueisleaudubon.org/programs

We hope to ‘see’ you there !

What is the longest you've ever worked on a project? A month? A year? How about 12 years?

Dr. Scott Schuette, bryologist and WPC's botany program manager with the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP), spent the past 12 years creating what he calls a “one-stop-shop checklist of all things bryophyte,” a new, detailed inventory of Pennsylvania's 547 mosses, liverworts and hornworts, with the help of other WPC and PNHP staff and interns.

Read about the project and the ecological importance of bryophytes on pages 14-15 of our latest issue of Conserve magazine: https://bit.ly/48kmq5u.
