Our Story

The Bares Ranch was developed in 1974 at the home of Mrs. Henry Bares in Youngsville, LA. Training for individuals with developmental disabilities was primarily based on agricultural work, hence the name “Bares Ranch”. Due to the increase of individuals being served, a new larger facility was built in 1980 at 809 S. Severin St. in Erath, LA on land donated by the Church. Training was focused on social skills and academic development; in 1986, supportive employment was introduced. Most of the funding for operations is state generated through the Office of Citizens with Disabilities Waiver program, but we hate to rely on the state because our programs are always the first to be cut because we are not protected by legislation. We are trying to concentrate our operations with our individuals with disabilities driven businesses. We want to be known for more than just being “a sheltered workshop”. The Arc of Vermilion/Bares Center expanded its vision in 2004 and opened a Resale Clothing store. After outgrowing the rental locations twice, the Board of Directors voted to buy property. In February of 2016, the doors opened at the new permanent location at 104 N. St. Charles St. in Abbeville. We still continue to have our Donation Center located at 2325 Charity St. in Abbeville, combined with another smaller Resale store.

Our Individuals have much to offer a community. We have ideas to expand our vision for work opportunities and are always willing to listen to others who have ideas. We are trying to upgrade our Community Footprint. We are willing to partner with others to give our individuals more opportunities, not only for working but for socializing as well.
