Our annual “Courir de Mardi Gras Cultural Activities” began with Traditional Mardi Gras classroom presentations and costume-making, as well as evening costume-making workshops, for MORE THAN 400 STUDENTS! In multiple schools, Pre-K through 8th grade students studying French language and culture learned the history of the well-known French "Courir de Mardi Gras" event that takes place in the rural communities of Acadiana. They learned how to create a Traditional Mardi Gras costume like those used during this event. Les Amis du Français en Vermillon provides students with all of the materials necessary to create their own unique and colorful costume!
Working with these students brings me a tremendous amount of joy! Seeing them have so much fun learning about this piece of our French heritage and culture, all while utilizing the French language, is an experience that I look forward to every year! No matter what it takes to make all of the “Courir de Mardi Gras” activities happen for students, my passion for the preservation of our French language and culture through education, continues to fuel my efforts!
When visiting with others about all of our activities, I am often asked the question, “Why do you do this?” I find the best way to express my thoughts is to share a few of the many special moments like these, where students leave my heart smiling and my eyes watering…Once, I was getting into my car to leave one of the schools, and a middle school student walking back to class after helping me load my supplies, ran back to me and said “Thank you very much for doing this for all of us. I really appreciate it! We have so much fun!” 🥹….. and another time, during one of the evening workshops, a student making her costume with her parents said, “Thank you I love this because it’s the only time during the year that all of my family is together doing something fun like this.” 🥹
Please enjoy these photos of students creating their “Traditional Mardi Gras Costumes”, both in the classrooms and at the evening family workshops, 💜💚💛 Additional photos will be shared in the next post!
