Ascension Winter Guard We are now a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization called Together We Rise. We sponsor Ascension Winter Guard. We are going on 12 years of existence.

We are open to anyone who is willing to commit their time, money, and energy to the betterment of humankind. We won multiple Region 6 TIA Novice and IRA championships. We have also won multiple MAIN Novice and ISR championships. We pride ourselves on having low dues and scholarships for those in need.

As summer is nearly over, it should be clear that we will not be sponsoring a spin camp. We won't start with anything until sometime in late October, early November.

MAIN has changed the rules for Sr guard this coming season, making it much easier for groups like this one to compete. Sr guards will be judged according to Regional A score sheets. Emphasis will be on the entertainment value of the show. Ex*****on, though important, will not play as big a roll in the show. This means that cleaning a show to the highest level possible will not be necessary. The other thing it should hopefully mean is that the groups can have more fun and be less worried about every detail. Also, the age for Sr guard starts at 18 yrs. This means that if you don't have the time or the money to march in a highly competitive group, you can still "play color guard" without the massive time or financial commitment.

These changes for a Sr guard is all good, not only for the members, but also the staff. It just reduces the levels of anxiety that I have seen hinder our color guards over the years.

We still are uncertain about what level of winter guard we will have this year. It will depend on the ages of interested members and how many interested members we have. We can compete with 5 members. Last year we started the season with 6, and had more join as time went by.

We have been at this (with different names) for 11 or 12 years, maybe a few more. We have been novice, regional A (intermediate), A Class, World Class, and Senior. We do all of this depending on who auditions. We do the best we can with what we have. Sometimes we are very successful and others not so much. The important part is the support the members give to each other. This past season we started with two pregnant members. We also had a member who had never ever picked up a piece of color guard equipment until her mother brought her to a rehearsal. This young lady accomplished so much in a few months. We have had members who have marched high school, college, Open Class, World Class, and some who have not touched a piece of color guard equipment for 5,10 or 20+ years. We continue to try and serve everyone who has any interest in this activity. I am eternally grateful for all the women and men that have been a part of the organization over the years. This all started as a thought between two friends and then two more friends, and a willing youth ministry leader who took a chance. If you got this far- thank you!

The first season of Ascension Winter Guard is now in the books. Ok, so not really our first season, but our first season as a non-profit with our new name. I think that everyone agreed that we miss the Barely Alive name! It was a good name and Heather, where ever you are ... thank you again for that name!!

Now that the season is over and there has been time to breathe. I personally want to thank everyone involved including Amber and Olivia for writing the majority of the work and teaching it after I went down with a bad back. LeAnna and Nick for ALL they did for the props, from building to transporting. Felicia for being a support for not only me, but the group and for supplying snacks during rehearsals. Finally, Allie. I am so glad you returned and so happy you did so while being pregnant! This was an amazing group of people with which to work and to get to know. Every single person involved brought something extra special to the group and for that I will always be thankful.

We are happy to report that our show has been completely blocked. Now is the fun part! We fill in the fancy stuff, and make things more entertaining. It has been refreshing to do a light show this season. Most of our music is recognizable, and our one song was and still is pretty popular. It has been such a pleasure to work with this group. Hard workers and good performers. The newbies are behind, but the experienced members are lighting it up. We have a contest this weekend at Avon Grove. Remember the show is blocked, it is not filled, so you won't get the total effect, but with losing time due to snow, and our facility being used on the day we rehearse, it is not bad. A shout out to - Your software has made life so much easier and consistent. Thank you 's for the beautiful flags. Here is just one picture from our first show!!!

A quick update. Things are going quite well with our mixed age group. The show is also coming along quite nicely and dare it be said, better than last year. The costumes are in the mail. The multiple props are being worked on and two of our three songs are 3/4 finished. The focus is still strong with everyone still working harder than in the past. They seem to be pushing each other to learn harder and harder skills. Our movement is light years what it has been in the past with Miss Amber really working the basics!!

As my friend Kim likes to say, "S**t is getting real." Having members that run the age gamut is definitely interesting. There is so much respect for each other all ready it is amazing. People encouraging and helping each other. Members already achieving beyond what they thought their limits were. Breaking boundaries for themselves. I think the name covers it - we are Ascending to new heights. Right now, the season seems long, but before you know it, it will be March and we will be wondering where the season went. I am so pleased at how productive our long rehearsals are. By the end people are beat, but that will change. We also have to learn to conserve a little at the beginning. Truly a new beginning heading down a different road. Tomorrow will be another day on the voyage.
