🐑 Wensleydale Ewe Fleece – Sonya 🐑

Sonya was born into this world the cutest little bundle of black and silver curls and personality. From day one, she looked like she had been professionally styled by a very tiny, very dedicated sheep stylist.

Her first shearing brought us a surprise. She was charcoal on the tips and silver close to the skin. As she has aged, her fleece has faded to the most glorious white with random streaks of silver, like Mother Nature got artsy and then wandered off mid project.

Through the years, Sonya has remained a prim and proper ewe. She is one of those girls who just goes about her day with no drama, kind to everyone, quietly efficient, and politely present for her occasional cookie and treat.

She is also delightfully quirky. Sonya enjoys affection, but only on her schedule, in her chosen location, and for exactly the amount of time she has pre approved in her head. She will absolutely come over for scratches… until she suddenly decides she is finished and walks away like a tiny woolly queen ending an audience.

All the while, without fuss or fanfare, she grows an incredible fleece.

🧶 About the Fleece

When I first opened this bag to skirt it, I will admit… I was sad. It looked dirty. It looked questionable. It looked like it was personally trying to discourage me.

So I went through it lock by lock, removing VM, belly, and britch. Then I grabbed some of the dirtiest locks and tossed them into a cold water soak as a test.

When I went back to rinse them, I was absolutely blown away.

The luster.
The bright white.
The delicate streaks of silver.
The glow up.

I was in love.

This fleece will scour beautifully and easily, leaving you with a gorgeous cloud of bright white curls and locks, accented with subtle silver that feels like a little surprise every time you spin.

🖍️ Color

I had a very difficult time photographing this fleece. My iPhone camera has either reached the end of its life or has simply chosen chaos. It is lying. Confidently.

This fleece is dusty throughout. Not just the tips. The whole thing. Living outside is messy business and Sonya has fully embraced the farm girl lifestyle.

Once washed, it scours down to a bright, clean white with delicate silver streaks. I tested this myself and was honestly stunned by the transformation.

So what you are seeing now is straight off the sheep. What you will get after washing is fresh, glowing, why is this so pretty. Please trust the process. And me. Not the iphone camera.

Juniper, sister to Anise, is her polar opposite. Where Anise is reserved and has no use for people, Juniper has earned an honorary degree in Human Treat Management.

She knows the sound of the treat cupboard opening.
She knows the crinkle of the bag.
She knows when you are thinking about treats.

And she will appear instantly.

We often call her “Jumpin’ Juniper” because she has zero hesitation about launching herself at you if treat dispersal is moving at an unacceptable pace. There is frequently some…colorful language associated with her name beyond “Jumpin.” She does not care. She is not offended. She is not listening.

All she wants is a cookie.

🧶 About the Fleece

Juniper’s fleece has the beautiful luster of a Wensleydale combined with the ultra soft, next to skin feel of BFL. It is rich, silky, and ridiculously pleasant to work with.

I went through this fleece lock by lock and removed as much VM as humanly possible. Juniper keeps herself fairly neat and tidy, but this fleece was still skirted carefully and thoroughly.

At one point, I seriously considered wrapping myself in it like a very satisfied burrito. Alas I settled for standing there drooling over it instead.

🖍️ Color

Some tips are sun kissed to a warm sienna. My camera had a full emotional breakdown trying to photograph this fleece.

It washed out the rich black.
It ignored the pewter tones.
It disrespected the dark chocolate shades.
I am angry at my camera.

In person, this fleece is deep, rich, and multidimensional. Once processed, it will blend into a gorgeous dark chocolate tone that is luxuriously soft next to the skin.

🐑 Wensleydale Ewe Fleece – Stormy 🐑

Stormy arrived here several years ago and immediately let us know that she was not here for a quiet, low maintenance retirement situation. Absolutely not.

Shortly after she arrived, she started dropping feed and cud. A vet visit and tooth float helped a little, but Stormy had already decided she would be a Lifestyle Ewe™ and require soaked pellets and soft hay for the rest of her life.

And just like that, she joined the Special Needs Club. No regrets. No apologies.

Now at 9 years old, Stormy is a friendly, loving yet …pushy, bossy, loud, deeply opinionated senior ewe who believes:

• All grain is hers
• All bowls are hers
• All personal space is hers
• Your opinions are irrelevant

Sharing is a myth. Complaints are a hobby. If anyone approaches her dinner, she files a formal grievance at maximum volume with a whack with her head. OSHA would be concerned.

Stormy’s fleece is a beautiful example of classic Wensleydale… long, curly, soft, and full of natural luster. It is the kind of fleece that makes skirting slow and careful, with plenty of pausing to admire the lock structure.

There was a lot of oooohing and ahhhhhing along the way.

She did have more VM than I’m willing to unleash on innocent spinners, so a fair amount went under the table. This was emotionally devastating. But I refuse to sell anything I wouldn’t happily process myself. What remains is chef’s kiss.

She tolerates us solely as a food delivery system. We are to be observed from a respectful distance and should never, under any circumstances, interfere with her daily schedule. Be late with dinner and she will come find you. She will stand quietly. She will stare. You will feel judged in your soul.

Meet Clara.

Clara and her brother Colbert were surprise arrivals last year to their mama, Wren. The only lambs born at the sanctuary that year, they were spoiled completely rotten and have never emotionally recovered from it.

Especially Clara.

She is happy. She is confident. She is deeply convinced the world revolves around her. And honestly… she is not wrong.

Clara is not a large ewe. She is an itty bitty fleece powerhouse wrapped in curls and attitude. She rarely walks anywhere. Walking is for peasants. Her preferred mode of transportation is leaping, bouncing, hopping, and occasionally launching herself like a tiny wool missile. If food is involved, she achieves speeds previously thought impossible for something shaped like a fuzzy sausage.

Clara’s lamb fleece does not have lamb tips because she had a little “spa day” as a baby and they were trimmed off when she was just a couple months old. What remains is pure, glorious Wensleydale perfection.

Waldo was the sweetest ram you would ever meet. Gentle, kind, and deeply loved. Sadly, my sweet boy departed this earth suddenly during a joust with one of his ram buddies. Alas, rams will be rams… and sometimes it happens. Heartbreaking all the same.

I had planned to send his final fleece to the mill to be made into yarn, but the staple length is simply too long. Instead, I am entrusting this fleece to a hand spinner who will lovingly turn it into something truly special. Something worthy of him. Thus I am discounting it to $15 per pound

🐑 This is an absolutely gorgeous fleece grown by Wensleydale 2 year old ewe Maeve.

Maeve is a quiet, non assuming little soul who is happiest just being an excellent sheep. She is not flashy or demanding, she simply goes about her day doing everything right. She keeps herself remarkably clean, stands back politely, and carries herself like a prim and proper young lady who was raised to mind her manners. The kind of sheep you glance at and think… well done, miss.

🐑Wensleydale/BL Ewe Fleece – Lyra 🐑

Meet Lyra. Twin to Twila, daughter of Precious and Fritz. Lyra is the chill, no-drama type. She’s all about the good life: cold water on a hot day, a pile of leafy alfalfa, soft orchard grass, a sprinkle of minerals, and a cookie or two. Give her that, and she’s basically on vacation.

🧶 About the Fleece:

Lyra’s fleece is jaw-dropping. I have never had another sheep pull off a color-change trick like this. She faded from a light silvery gray to nearly white, then drifted back into gray again. Many locks are two-toned along the staple, and the luster is so bright it might blind you. The hand? Ridiculously soft. I skirted this fleece lock by lock and ruthlessly tossed anything I wouldn’t spin myself. There’s some VM, but nothing serious, give the locks a pop and most of it falls right out. It’s dusty from summer, but a quick wash and you’ll have glowing white with striking gray tones (see rinsed locks in the pics).

🖍️ Color:

Bright white base, with locks shifting from dark gray to pale gray and everything in between. A test soak of skirted bits in cold water turned the white bright and brought out grays that range from soft mist to charcoal. It will scour fast and beautifully. I can just see this over dyed into a heathery masterpiece!

Meet Calliope. Calliope believes in being one with her food. If she were human, she’d be a full-blown foodie influencer. She’d stroll the feed store with a curated palate, sampling alfalfa like fine wine, critiquing orchard grass for texture, and snapping moody selfies with her grain mix. Her Instagram would be all close-ups of texturized pellets and artisan hay.

🧶 About the Fleece

Don’t panic when you see her photo. Yes, she grew an 8-pound fleece… but most of it was sacrificed in the name of quality. After skirting, muttering curse words, and grieving over every trashed lock, I was left with 2.6 glorious pounds of soft, curly perfection. This is peak Wensleydale, minimal VM, no hay-glued disaster zones, just lustrous, bouncy locks begging to be spun.
