Fishtrap

Fishtrap Founded in 1988, Fishtrap's mission is to cultivate clear thinking and good writing in and about the West. So began an annual tradition.

Fishtrap is a watering hole for creative writers, avid readers, and thoughtful people who are passionate about the place we live. It was in the mid 1980s when Wallowa County bookstore owner Rich Wandschneider attended a Western writers conference in Portland, Oregon, but something didn’t feel quite right. Rich told conference organizer Kim Stafford that it seemed the event wasn’t really a gatherin

g of writers of the West, but of Willamette Valley “I-5 writers.” Kim agreed, then issued a challenge: “Why don’t you host the next one in Wallowa County?” In 1988, Wandschneider, Stafford, and the award-winning journalist and historian, Alvin Josephy organized a gathering at Wallowa Lake with the theme “West Coast Writers and East Coast Publishers.”

The Summer Fishtrap Gathering of Writers was born. Every July, readers, writers, journalists, historians, publishers, and lovers of the arts from all over the world gather at Wallowa Lake to write, to explore issues important to people of the West, and to make connections. The weeklong conference has provided hundreds of writers the opportunity to work with some of the best authors and teachers in the West including Ursula K. LeGuin, Luis Alberto Urrea, Bill Kittredge, Laura Pritchett, Anis Mojgani, Kathleen Dean Moore and many, many others. Over the years Fishtrap grew to add new programs like Winter Fishtrap, The Big Read, and the Outpost wilderness writing program. More recently, Fishtrap has expanded to include youth programming, the Fishtrap Fireside reading series, and several in-person and online workshops throughout the year. Fishtrap founders Rich Wandschneider and Kim Stafford continue to be closely associated with Fishtrap as Advisors and since 2015, Shannon McNerney has led the organization as Executive Director building on Fishtrap’s mission to “promote clear thinking and good writing in and about the West.”

Perrin Kerns has been attending and teaching at Fishtrap for 32 years. Learn more about why she keeps coming back, and why you should join her this summer. https://fishtrap.org/summer-fishtrap/

Q: What keeps you coming back to Summer Fishtrap?
✏️ The community at Fishtrap keeps me coming back. I have never worked at a writing conference where there was such a generous and open feeling. There is no competition at all, just a sense of easy production and creativity. It is a marvel to teach in this kind of environment.

Q: What do you look most forward to this summer?
✏️ I always look forward to meeting my students, and I am excited to be with this group of faculty. I am also excited to see my past students and catch up with them. And, I always love to be surrounded by the beauty of the Wallowas! In terms of my class, I am excited to teach students about the lyric essay and to see how the form will spark their writing. It is a very liberating form, and we need some liberation right now.

Q: Your workshop is titled, “Making Good Trouble with the Lyric Essay.” What might people expect to gain from the experience?
✏️ They can expect to encounter very playful forms for writing personal essays. They can expect wild production. They can expect some focus on their "American Story." They can expect to leave with some writing that they feel wonderful about. The title of the class is a reference to a statement by John Lewis, who was not only a long-serving representative in the US Congress, but also a believer in nonviolent activism.

Q: From your perspective, what is the difference between lyric essay and essay or prose?
✏️ The lyric essay leans on fragmentation and collage to find its form. It allows for fissures and is not necessarily linear. It can also borrow other forms and make them anew. For example, a lyric essay might be written in the form of a medical prescription or a jury summons or a menu. There is a close relationship between poetry and the lyric essay as meaning arises from a resonance of the parts.

Q: This is your first Summer Fishtrap. What are you most looking forward to?

✏️Since the pandemic, I’ve taught many writing classes and workshops, almost all of them online. We know that something different happens when we’re physically together, writing, reading, and talking writing. Not to mention that we’ll be in one of the most beautiful places in the country in the company of a fantastic faculty and participants.

Q: What do you hope people will gain from your workshop?

✏️The workshop is a place to learn about writing craft, but I know from experience that the work we do together—especially in a place of natural richness like Fishtrap—is an opportunity for people to deepen their relationship with nature, and to clarify and articulate why nature matters to them. This deep personal work feels more important than ever in the current political climate.

Q: How does your past experience as the editor of Orion Magazine and Milkweed Editions help you as an instructor?

✏️My career started in research biology and fell sideways into publishing. For years I worried that I didn’t have the right kind of training to be an editor. At some point, I realized that I had trained in the hot seat, learning from the best nature writers in the country. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned from the likes of Barry Lopez, Terry Tempest Williams, Kim Stafford, and Wendell Berry.

Q: Does an editor teach differently than a working writer?

✏️I know as an editor I never think about writing without thinking about the reader. Editors are obsessed with audience as much as they are obsessed with good writing.

Q: As an avid birder, do you have any species you’re excited to see at Wallowa Lake?

✏️It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the west during breeding season, so I look forward to seeing birds like Dippers and Violet-green Swallows and Black-headed Grosbeaks—birds I know well but have never seen when they are nesting and on territory. It will be fun to get out and greet these old friends.

Q: This is your first Summer Fishtrap week. What are you most looking forward to?
✏️I am most excited for the community, for the sense of camaraderie. One reason I love writers is that they (we) suck at small talk. I am certain the conversations we share at Fishtrap will be challenging, inspiring, moving, silly, and sometimes sad, but never shallow or boring.

Q: You have years of writing about your outdoor experience. What do you hope to find at Wallowa Lake?
✏️Thirty years ago (30!) at one of those crazy junctions in life, I accepted a job with the Forest Service as a wilderness ranger in the Eagle Cap. I was insanely excited. The Wallowas! Such a special place apart, a place with rich indigenous history, an unspeakably beautiful place. Then I injured myself in a backcountry ski accident and could not do the job. I ended up in the North Cascades, which is where I've stayed, happily. But still ... I've often wondered how life would be different. What would the Wallowa version of Ana Maria be like? I guess in June we'll find out.

Q: Your nonfiction workshop is titled “Changing Places.” What do you hope people will be inspired by and gain from the workshop?
✏️ The best writing, I've always believed, is driven by change. Our world is changing incredibly fast. Humans and more-than-humans alike are migrating, adapting, migrating, sometimes suffering. Together we'll work on practical ways to morph our moment into art. I'm hoping we'll all leave more confident and committed to telling the stories we most want to tell.
