What an incredible day at Jack Creek Preserve! 🌲

Yesterday, we celebrated the dedication of a portion of the Preserve as Old-Growth Forest, and we are so grateful for everyone that joined us!

The afternoon began with an interpretive hike guided by Ashley Martens with the Old Growth Forest Network along the Jack Creek Trail, followed by a champagne toast to mark this meaningful milestone. We were honored to have one of our founders, Dottie Fossel, with us for the celebration!

The community spirit continued with an amazing potluck, delicious food shared by so many attendees, and a keg generously donated by Burnt Tree Brewing.

We were inspired by the incredible turnout and the shared commitment to education, stewardship, and habitat conservation. Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed food, shared stories, and helped make the day so memorable. This dedication is not just a celebration of a forest—it is a celebration of a community committed to conserving these irreplaceable habitats for generations to come.

Last weekend we welcomed 10 teachers to this year’s Conservation Field School focusing on birds. MT Fish Wildlife and Parks instructors provided Flying Wild and Project Wild lessons and hands-on activities for teachers to take back to their classrooms. MT Raptor Conservation Center visited with a live Peregrine Falcon and shared about raptor conservation. Our Education Director, Addison, shared basics of birding, birding resources, how to incorporate bird lessons into their curriculum, and tips and tricks for keeping students engaged outside. Aside from observing several species of birds, moose, elk, deer, black bears, and a mountain lion, participants earned 15 MT OPI Renewal Units! We are very grateful to Montana Audubon, Spanish Peaks Community Foundation, and generous donors for supporting this Conservation Field School!! Mountain lion video credit: Mike Tatum

Yesterday we welcomed 21 Big Sky Community School students for their last day of school and their very first visit to the Preserve! Students got to learn about wildlife habitat and water ecology/macro-invertebrates before heading out for a short hike where Columbia spotted frogs were a huge hit! Have a great summer Big Sky Community School!
