The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday, June 17) due to the excessive heat warning. The main section of our museum is not air conditioned, and everything metal in the railyard becomes a potential burn risk at the predicted high temperatures. We do, however, plan to be open the rest of the week including Juneteenth on Friday and Father's Day on Sunday, weather permitting. As always, please consult this page or call the main museum number at 580-233-3051 if you need to verify whether or not we are open (especially important if you're making a special trip from out of town). Thanks and we hope to see you soon!

By now you may have heard the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma is in the process of rebranding the museum. Not the location and not the mission but primarily the way the museum is presented to the public. The first step in that journey is our name. We have already been approved by the Oklahoma Secretary of State and are now waiting on the Internal Revenue Service to have our name changed to Enid Railroad Museum, Inc. We've been a 501c3 nonprofit corporation since 1978 and have been open to the public since April of 1989. During those 48 years, we've never fully accomplished our desire to tell the story of railroading in Enid where we live and work. With the name change, we are zeroing in on Enid's unique railroad history, what the railroads have done to develop and grow our city, and how railroading impacts the daily lives of so many citizens. The name change has come about as part of the museum's first-ever strategic five-year plan, recently put together by our Board of Directors facilitated by leadership from the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits. The photo represents the first (but not final) visual representation of our new name. Special thanks to museum volunteer Kevin Oakley for creating it. Stay tuned and follow along as we reveal more of the strategic plan and, more importantly, what the changes and improvements will mean to our visitors and our community. We hope you will be as excited for the future of the Enid Railroad Museum as we are!

Special thanks to Joe Malan, Presentation Editor for the great article in today's Enid News & Eagle about the museum's recent painting of our Frisco 1519 steam locomotive. Thanks also to Mikaila Kraus, EN&E intern, for her work as well. The two companies who donated the paint (black, silver, red, and clear coat) and supplies were Wilko Paint, Inc. (Jeff Mills, President) in Wichita, KS and The Sherwin-Williams Company Protective & Marine Coatings (John Peterson, Sales Representative) in Edmond, OK. Both of these companies were incredibly generous with their donations and truly made the project possible. If you find yourself needing the kind of industrial sandblasting and painting performed by J & I Industrial Painting in Woodward, as well as any type of graphics work and painting done by Enid companies Signs on a Dime and Neato Design Co, I highly recommend you give them a call. They are all highly skilled and great folks to work with. Finally, a huge "thank you" to all those who donated their time and monetary resources that allowed this cosmetic restoration to be completed. The 1519 and her sister locomotives were truly beautiful pieces of machinery and we're honored to have her as part of the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma!

Here (https://youtu.be/u6Wh9IkLcqs?si=7nVjD87gCl3xKP99) is a wonderful video produced by a great family during their recent visit to the museum. For those of us who volunteer to keep the museum running, this is what it's all about. Thanks Todd, LoriAnn, and Calvin. Safe travels as you have many more fun adventures!

The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma wishes to honor and remember all those in the armed forces of our country who have paid the ultimate price to secure and protect our freedoms. Railroads have long served to make it possible for troops, equipment, and supplies to be moved great distances to support the war efforts and they continue to do so today. Thank you and God bless all for your dedication, bravery, and patriotism!πŸ‘πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸš‚πŸš†

The end of the beginning or the beginning of the end (of the painting)? Graphic artists and painters Kelly and Ty Tompkins with Neato Design Co and Paul Stone with Signs on a Dime began painting the gold numbers, letters, and doric striping on the museum's Frisco 1519 4-8-2 locomotive today. The photo is the first number painted on the back end of the tender and it looks marvelous! Once these two wonderfully talented companies finish their work, our 101-year old steamer will be ready to strut her stuff for many years to come. Special thanks to all those who have done the work, donated paint and supplies, and contributed almost $5,000.00 to date to make the museum's "star of the show" a beautiful sight to behold once again! We appreciate each and every one of you. THANK YOU! (The bright spot to the left of the number is the sun shining on that gorgeous new paint job.)πŸ˜ŠπŸš‚

Today begins National Volunteer Week. The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma would like to sincerely thank those who selflessly give of their time, talent, and resources who make it possible for the museum to carry out its mission of preservation, interpretation, and education concerning the unique railroad history of Enid and northwest Oklahoma. We literally couldn't do it without you!

1519's new coat of several colors is nearing completion with the clear coating added by the talented crew at J & I Industrial Painting, LLC out of Woodward. Isaac and his team have done an incredible job, battling hot metal and high winds while working 10+ hours a day for the past two weeks. We at the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma couldn't be happier with the quality product this business is providing, using donated paint and supplies from Wilko Paint, Inc. in Wichita, KS and The Sherwin-Williams Company Protective & Marine Coatings in Edmond, OK. After the painting is completed and allowed to cure, graphics will be added in the form of letters, numbers, and the beautiful doric striping that adorned this engine and her siblings a century ago. We are also searching for a company or companies that might want to help us put a protective cover over the engine and tender to better preserve the new paint.
