The Ostfeld Community Field transformed into an interactive learning space as our 3s/4s students hosted the annual Mary Hawkins STEAM Fair this spring, sharing games they imagined, designed, and built themselves.

Throughout the project, students explored concepts of technology, strategy, and statistics while learning how to turn abstract ideas into tangible, interactive experiences. As guests stopped by to play, our young creators explained their thinking, demonstrated their games, and cheered on one another.

With support from Dr. Beck, Morrow House students, families, and community members, the fair was a meaningful celebration of creativity, collaboration, and student innovation!

For the second consecutive year, our Morrow House student council has earned the ASCA Student Council School of Excellence Award! πŸ† EMS stands as one of only 54 schools nationwide to receive this distinction in 2026.

This back-to-back national achievement is a direct reflection of the student leadership on our campus β€” and the incredible educator guiding them.

We are proud to congratulate middle school English teacher Erin Hennessy on being named a 2026 ASCA Exemplary Advisor by the NAESP and the American Student Council Association. Ms. Hennessy is one of just 25 educators across the country recognized this year for going above and beyond to inspire and empower student leaders. 🌟

The ASCA awards celebrate the very values that are central to life at EMS: service, civic responsibility, and purposeful student leadership.

Thank you, Ms. Hennessy, for your dedication, and congratulations to our phenomenal student council on another exceptional year! πŸ¦…πŸ‘

For science class, 7th-graders collected water samples from our campus brook to identify the macroinvertebrates inhabiting it. πŸ§ͺ

Students used statistical analysis to quantify the brook’s health before developing a "Stream Health Briefing" with recommendations for improvement. They then shared their findings with the Watershed Institute’s StreamWatch Schools program β€” a statewide initiative collecting water quality data from student research teams across New Jersey.

Through this interdisciplinary science and math project, students gained hands-on experience in environmental science, data analysis, and scientific communication while applying classroom learning to a real-world environmental challenge. πŸ”¬πŸ“‰

Step into the innovative and imaginative community of Kidtown! 🏘️🌳 Our first graders "opened their doors" to proud families, giving grand tours of their collaboratively designed model towns and showcasing their impressive problem-solving skills. They mapped out essential resources, added their own creative touches, and proved they know what it takes to make a community thrive.

Before the big reveal, our amazing first-grade team β€” Ms. Goodwin, Ms. Hur, and Ms. Harmande β€” shared the incredible, hands-on learning journey that fueled this project, seamlessly connecting research, art, engineering, computer science, literacy, and math.

What does the rise of AI mean for childhood, deep thinking, and the future of learning?

It's a complex question that we approach at EMS with great excitement and a healthy, necessary caution.

Last month, EMS brought our community together for an important evening of dialogue, reflection, and learning around AI & The Future of Learning, a conversation intentionally designed and moderated by Head of School Marek Beck, Ph.D., to help families thoughtfully navigate this rapidly changing landscape.

Our guiding principle? At EMS, technology is never a shortcut. The primacy of the human connection and the depth of student inquiry always come first. The thinker is always the human.πŸ’‘

Highlights from AI & The Future of Learning ↓

✦ Global Perspectives: Keynote by Holly Clark, author of "The AI Infused Classroom" and global strategist for AI in education, on leading the future of education with ethics, safety, and transparency.

✦ Real-World Insights: Industry leaders at Comcast & Adobe β€” who are also EMS parents β€” on how AI is reshaping the professional landscape our children will inherit.

✦ Pedagogical & Cognitive Integrity: EMS educators Sybille Bruun-Moss, Samantha Morra, and Christine Brennan Davis on the developmental science and "Human-in-the-Loop" pedagogy designed to protect active learning.

✦ Student Leadership: Middle schoolers sharing, in their own words, how they use AI as a "Socratic partner" to stretch their minds and deepen critical thinking.

As moderator, Dr. Beck guided a thoughtful conversation that balanced possibility with responsibility, helping families consider not only what AI can do but also how we ensure our children remain curious, ethical, deeply human thinkers in an AI-shaped world.

This is what thoughtful, intentional innovation looks like β€” ensuring our students remain the "authors" of their own lives, not just users of a tool.

Our eighth graders traded their history books for walking shoes as they explored the heart of our nation’s capital. πŸ› Standing among landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, or stepping into the replica of the Oval Office at the National Museum of American History, transformed their curriculum into a lived experience.

These firsthand encounters help our students move beyond the classroom to gain a deeper understanding of the people and events they’ve studied. Beyond the history lessons, this trip was a meaningful opportunity for the class to bond and celebrate their final year together in Morrow House. πŸ¦…β€οΈ

Last month, members of the Parents and Caregivers of Jewish Children Affinity Group, together with their children, led a meaningful Passover assembly for the Little School. Serving as cultural ambassadors, they shared the story of the holiday and its modern-day observances, fostering a deeper understanding of Jewish heritage across our campus.

We thank the families and students who lead these efforts. These moments of connection ensure EMS remains a community where every culture is welcomed and celebrated.
