Flag Day commemorates the date the first Continental Congress adopted the American Flag in its First Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777. While Flag celebrations took place for many years, Woodrow Wilson was the first president to issue a proclamation that June 14th be called National Flag Day. Calvin Coolidge issued a second proclamation in 1927, Finally, in 1949 Congress approved and President Harry Truman signed the bill officially recognizing Flag Day.

Happy Flag Day display it proudly!

The Penelope Terry Abbey Chapter, NSDAR, was honored to attend the Memorial Day Coffeehouse on Saturday, hosted by the Town of Somers Veterans Affairs.

Chapter Regent, Laurie Edwards, shared an overview of our ongoing Virtual Cemetery Project, highlighting how this work preserves local history and honors the patriots who helped shape our nation.

Laurie also spoke about two important preservation efforts: the completed restoration of the Jonathan Edwards Memorial, and
the upcoming restoration of the Captain Thomas Abbey Memorial.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support veteran-focused community events and to continue our mission of historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

Dedication Ceremony for the restoration of the Jonathan Edwards Memorial

Ninety-five years ago, in 1931, the Penelope Terry Abbey Chapter placed the Second Meeting House-Jonathan Edwards historical monument boulder on Enfield Street. This marked a very important place, building, and event in our history. It marked the location of the Second Meeting House where the First Church of Christ held services.

Most notably this Meeting House hosted a revival service on July 8, 1741, where Jonathan Edwards was the guest preacher. Here he preached his famous sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God". This sermon became the catalyst for the revival known as "The Great Awakening".

Our chapter worked with Jerry Loving and Rogers Memorial Studio to preserve the original boulder and implement the new design to enhance the message, readability and durability of this memorial.

It is a true honor to have President General Ginnie Sebastian Storage and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)—one of America’s most distinguished patriotic organizations—join the Military Women’s Memorial in recognizing our 2025 Patriot Leadership Award recipients, the extraordinary women four-star generals and admirals of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This marks the third consecutive year that NSDAR has partnered with the Memorial to shine a light on individuals whose leadership and vision have advanced opportunities for America’s military women. We are immensely grateful for NSDAR’s generous sponsorship of this year's Patriot Leadership Award celebration and for its long-standing commitment to our mission.

Earlier this year, NSDAR reached a remarkable milestone—$1 million in cumulative contributions to the Military Women’s Memorial. The organization is the proud sponsor of "Defending a New Nation," a new gallery that will be featured in the future renovation of the Memorial.

Through this enduring partnership—spanning more than 30 years, even before the Memorial’s 1997 dedication, and with the support of NSDAR’s far-reaching network of chapters, the stories of courage, commitment, and service of America’s military women continue to take their rightful place at the heart of our Nation’s history.
