Union Center Fire Company Inc. Union Center Fire Company started in 1947 with one station located at 1805 Union Center Hwy. A two-bay station was built at 1209 Taft Ave.

Over the years this station has been expanded to meet the needs of the community. As the population grew and shifted to the North Side area, a second station was needed to serve this area as well. and has since been upgraded to a four-bay station. Union Center Fire Company started a First Aid Team in the mid-1960's. In 1992 an EMS team was formed. The team is made up of personnel with CPR training, New York State Certified First Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Paramedics. The EMS team is trained to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for cardiac arrest patients, Oxygen, and airway management equipment - all of which is contained in our EMS response vehicle. The equipment and personnel are dispatched to respond in advance of an ambulance to get medical aid to a patient as quickly as possible. All emergency calls are received at Broome County's state-of-the-art 911 Communications Center. All alarms are radio-dispatched to our personnel through this Center. Upon receiving an alarm, members respond to the station and respond the proper emergency equipment to the scene.

Fall leaves are beautiful - but they can also create a fire hazard.
As leaves begin to pile up, keep them away from your home, garage, vehicles, and other structures.
🚫 Never burn leaves or piles of yard debris where burning is prohibited.
🍂 Keep leaves and other combustibles away from heating equipment and ignition sources.
🧹 Clean leaves from around your home and property regularly.
🌬️ Be especially careful on dry, windy days when fires can spread quickly.

As temperatures drop, heating systems go up!
Before you turn on the heat for the season, take a few minutes to make sure your home heating equipment is safe.
✔️ Have heating equipment inspected and serviced regularly
✔️ Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment
✔️ Never use your oven or stovetop to heat your home
✔️ Plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet
✔️ Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room or go to bed
✔️ Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working
A little preparation now, can help prevent a heating-related fire later.

As the leaves begin to fall, remember that burning leaves is prohibited in our county. Leaf fires create excessive smoke, reduce visibility on roadways, and can easily spread to nearby grass, brush, or structures—especially during dry conditions.
Instead of burning leaves, consider these safer options:
🍁 Compost them
🍁 Use them as mulch around trees and gardens
🍁 Bag them for curbside pickup or take them to an approved disposal site, if available

As students head back to school, let's work together to keep everyone safe on our roads and sidewalks.
👟 For Kids Walking or Biking to School:
✅ Use sidewalks whenever available.
✅ Cross only at crosswalks and obey crossing guards and traffic signals.
✅ Look left, right, then left again before crossing.
✅ Stay alert—put away phones and remove earbuds while crossing streets.
✅ If biking, always wear a properly fitted helmet and follow the rules of the road.
🏡 For Parents:
✔️ Walk or bike the route with your child before the first day of school.
✔️ Choose routes with sidewalks, crosswalks, and crossing guards whenever possible.
✔️ Identify safe places to go if your child needs help, such as a trusted neighbor's home or a local business.
