by Brian Plume, Bureau of Forestry Spring is here and wildland fire activity is once again at the forefront for the Bureau of Forestry and DCNR leadership. Statistically, wildfire occurrences are the highest during March, April, and May.

Please stay safe while you’re out there.

Another reason to say NO to ATVs on publicly owned land. Save your ecology, be nice to Mother Earth right in your own back yard.

Looks like we’re finally having somewhat of a real winter here in Cameron County! With the deep snow and consistantly cold temperatures, conditions for cross country skiing and snow shoeing haven’t been this good in many years.

The Sand Springs Cross Country Ski trail is an approximate 3 1/2 Mile single track loop through mature hardwoods and Mountain Laurel crossing the headwaters of the left branch of Canoe Run via a ski bridge. There is currently a shortened, 2 1/2 mile loop with a ski/snow shoe path broken into the deep snow on this trail.

The Sand Springs Trail gated DCNR Forestry road runs adjacent to the Sand Springs Cross Country Ski Trail loop and covers the headwaters of both the laft and right branches of Canoe Run. This road is a rolling meander through mature hardwoods and terminates at an old well site at the head of the right branch of Canoe Run. There is currently a cross country ski trail broken into the deep snow to the terminus which is 2.75 miles out - so 5 1/2 miles out and back. This is a great run with many opportunities for effortless gliding on the packed in trail.

Both these trails cover the remote and wild Canoe Run watershed and there are many possible opportunities for wildlife viewing. The Canoe Run Elk Herd recently has been foraging for acorns in the remote right branch of this watershed. Its amazing how these animals can smell and dig up an acorn through a foot of snow!

Both the Sand Springs Ski Trail and the Sand Spring DCNR Forest Road begin at the gate along May Hollw Road approximately five miles out of Emporium. From Emporium it is easy to access May Hollow road via South Broad Street and Broad Street bridge to South Mountain/Whitemore Hill Road (SR 3001). After several switchbacks up Wittimore Hill road to the stop sign at the top of the mountain, stay straight on May Hollow road for another approximately 1 1/2 miles to the Sand Springs Trail Gate on the left.
