The Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit, formerly The Family Violence Prevention Program, is a tax exempt governmental unit under Section 115(1), that was designed to meet the physical and emotional needs of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The purpose of the organization is to minimize the physical and emotional trauma for people affected by sexual and domestic violence throug

h the provision of direct services, while reducing the incidences of interpersonal violence through public education, community outreach, and prevention programs. The staff and volunteers of the program understand that taking the first step to stopping the violence is key. The program began operation in August 1991, with one part time worker to serve Emporia and Greensville. In 1993, funding was increased to hire a full time staff member and services were extended into Brunswick and Sussex. In 1998, a grant from the Virginia Department of Health was received allowing for the hiring of an additional worker with an emphasis on r**e and sexual assault. In 2000, funding was increased to include a part time staff member to handle volunteer recruitment and reporting.

At the Family Violence & Sexual Assault Unit (FVSAU), our work goes far beyond providing services — we walk alongside our clients during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. 💜

Every day, we advocate, support, and help survivors regain stability by connecting them to critical resources, offering guidance, and reminding them that they are not alone. From safety planning to emotional support and practical assistance, our goal is to help individuals and families move forward with dignity and hope.

We are incredibly grateful to Boar’s Head for their generous donation, which will directly help our clients with utility bills. Assistance like this makes a real, tangible difference — easing stress, keeping lights on, and allowing families to focus on healing rather than survival.

Thank you, Boar’s Head, for your compassion and commitment to supporting our community. Because of partners like you, we’re able to continue doing this vital work. 💙

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and it’s an important time to talk about what healthy relationships should look like for our teens.

Dating violence isn’t always physical. It can also look like:
đźš© Constant jealousy or controlling behavior
đźš© Checking phones/social media passwords
đźš© Isolation from friends and family
đźš© Threats, manipulation, or emotional abuse
🚩 Pressure to do things they aren’t comfortable with

Our teens deserve relationships that feel safe, respectful, and supportive — not stressful, scary, or controlling.

✨ Healthy love should never hurt.
✨ Love shouldn’t come with fear.
✨ Boundaries are not “being mean”… they’re being safe.

If you’re a parent, caregiver, or trusted adult — keep the door open. Ask questions. Listen without judgment. Your voice and support can make all the difference.

And to any teen reading this:
You are not alone. You are not overreacting. And help is available.

📌 If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out.
FVSAU is here.
