SOS CASA of the Flint Hills

SOS CASA of the Flint Hills A six-year-old girl rescued from an abusive father and bounced around to eight foster homes and six different schools over the course of two years. Join us!

Serving the KS 5th Judicial District (Chase and Lyon Counties) SOS CASA of the Flint Hills recruits, trains, and supports community volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children. Four children separated from each another and placed in different locations after their mother was jailed. A young boy kicked out of his house, and forced to sleep on a cot in the hallway of a group home until

he turned eighteen—when all his possessions were handed to him in a garbage bag as he was officially “aged out” of the system. These are not isolated stories. They are everyday realities of children in the foster care and child welfare system. This is a failure of society’s fundamental obligation to protect the rights and needs of children. The solution is a CASA volunteer—a specially trained advocate, appointed by a judge, who fights for the rights of children during the most vulnerable time of their young lives. A trusted adult empowered to ensure that each child is well cared for—able to find a safe, loving, permanent home. But 65 percent of the children who need a CASA volunteer do not have one. That’s hundreds of thousands children in the United States of America that don’t have the hope a CASA volunteer can offer. You can make a difference! We won’t rest until every child has a CASA volunteer. Help us reach every child!

This month we celebrate the power of family reunification and its positive impact on the lives of children in the foster care system and their parents. It’s important to highlight the importance of family preservation and the efforts undertaken to ensure children remain or are reunited with their families when possible.

May is men’s mental health month. According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America nearly 1 in 10 men experience depression or anxiety, but less than half receive treatment. Men are less likely to seek professional help due to stigma, cultural expectations, or the belief that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

Speaking up is not weak, it’s choosing to live your life for the better. Opening up and talking with a licensed therapist, support group, or a trusted friend can help.

Mental health matters at every age—and for many children and families involved in the child welfare system, emotional support and healing are essential. Trauma, loss, uncertainty, and change can have lasting effects, but with support, hope and healing are possible. This month let’s remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, healing takes time, and no one has to face challenges alone.
