Today, 13 more cats are receiving spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and care through our partnership with East Emporia Veterinary Clinic.

And we're just getting started.

This Saturday, we're teaming up with KSU Shelter Medicine and Osage Friends For Felines TNR for a 50-cat Spay-a-Thon! That means 50 more community cats who won't contribute to the next generation of kittens living on our streets and in our neighborhoods.

Every cat fixed helps reduce suffering, prevent unwanted litters, and improve the health of our local cat population.

Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible—our veterinary partners, volunteers, trappers, caregivers, and supporters. 🖤

EMERGENCY INTAKE IN PROGRESS

We just received a message on our phone line about a very skinny cat, laying on the ground, twitching. Immediately, one of our volunteers rushed into action to get the cat and bring it in for veterinary care.

When the volunteer arrived, the cat was unresponsive and barely breathing.

The cat is now at East Emporia Veterinary Clinic.

WHAT WE KNOW: this poor mother cat is severely dehydrated, underweight, has a wound on her head, and is covered in ticks and fly strike. The vets are working to stabilize her now and determine what more is causing her condition.

We will share more as we get more information.

Last night, we rushed one of our recent intakes to the emergency vet.

She had stopped eating and drinking and was crying out in pain.

She had puss coming out of her nose and was constantly pawing at her mouth.

We had been to the vet with her the day before, but she was still declining rapidly. We knew that we had to try something different or she wouldn’t make it.

An NG (nasogastric) tube placement was attempted, but neither of her nasal cavities were clear/wide enough for it.

She was too weak to safely receive sedation for a surgical tube placement, but she desperately needed nutrients, pain medication, and antibiotics. We started to discuss euthanasia.

But, then she started purring and making biscuits. We could tell she wanted to live, so we decided to keep going.

We decided to try placing an IV catheter. We knew it would be difficult to do since the kitten’s veins (that were already small) were even smaller due to dehydration. However, on the second attempt, the vet was successful. We all breathed a sigh of relief knowing this baby would now be able to receive some of the life-saving medication and support she needed.

We received word from our vet that she made it through the night and was sitting up on her own this morning. She still isn’t out of the woods, but she is one step closer.

Her emergency care and hospitalization is already close to $500. We don’t know how much longer she will need to be hospitalized before she can safely return to foster care. Please consider donating to help with her medical fees.

PS: this kitten is part of a recent TNR turned rescue mission of more than 25 cats. We will be sharing more about their story soon 💛

NAME THE KITTENS! 😻

Here are 6 of the 11 sick kittens that we recently took in. All were covered in fleas, are underweight, anemic, and have upper respiratory infections.

There are:
- three female cow-kitties
- two female tabby/calicos
- one all black male kitten who happens to be a cryptorchid (one testicle has not descended)

What should we name them?! Leave your best ideas/themes below & vote up your favorites 🖤

Just this week, we have:
- received seven new TNR requests, adding 200+ cats to our spay/neuter waiting list
- taken 19 emergency cases into foster care
- spayed/neutered 67 cats (for a total of 634 so far this year)
- traveled 300+ miles to trap cats and get them fixed
- spent over $5,000 on veterinary care

We are the only rescue that serves our full county. We are all volunteers. We receive no city or county funding. Please consider donating to help us continue this work.

Today was a big day.

First: 38 cats received spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations through our $50 spay/neuter clinic in partnership with Bruce Veterinary Services. We offered this clinic for owned cats to help more families access affordable veterinary care and prevent unwanted litters.

During surgery, four cats were found to have life-threatening conditions: pyometra and hydrometra. Both involve serious infections or disease of the uterus that can lead to a slow, painful death if left untreated. Because these cats were spayed today, their lives were saved.

Then: Remember Jennifer? The woman whose house caught on fire and was missing several of her cats?

Over the past couple of weeks, we trapped two survivors and located three cats who sadly did not make it. But there was still one cat missing.

Until today.

This afternoon, we trapped the final missing cat and reunited Jennifer with her.

Thirty-eight cats fixed. Four lives saved in surgery. One family finally made whole again.

Today was a very good day. 🖤

We are deep in kitten season, and local shelters, rescues, and foster homes are all feeling the strain. Every day, organizations across our area receive calls about kittens that have been found outdoors—but many of those kittens don't actually need to be rescued.

In fact, removing healthy kittens from their mother can sometimes do more harm than good.

If you find kittens, take a moment to assess the situation before bringing them to a shelter or rescue. The graphic below will walk you through the steps to determine whether the kittens are truly orphaned, injured, or in need of intervention.

By making informed decisions, you can help ensure that limited rescue resources remain available for the kittens and cats who need them most.

Please take a few minutes to review this guide—and consider sharing it to help others know what to do when they find kittens this spring and summer.

Two days ago, Jennifer was reunited with another one of her missing cats. 🖤

Over the past 10 days, we’ve been on a special mission for a local resident.

Earlier this month, Jennifer’s home caught fire. In the aftermath, six of her cats were missing.

We happened to have a two-week break between TNR events, so we reached out and offered our trapping services to help bring her cats home.

The inside of the house was covered in ash and standing water left behind after the fire. We had spotted a couple of cats, so we set traps throughout the house, garage, and basement. Every few hours, we checked them, refreshed food, and hoped for good news.

After a few days, we caught one of Jennifer’s cats.

Then things went quiet.

We knew another cat was hiding in the garage, so we kept the area secured and placed multiple traps in hopes of catching her. Days passed with no luck.

As time went on, Jennifer began to fear that some of her missing cats had not survived the fire. She asked if we would search the home for them because she simply couldn't bring herself to do it.

Four of our volunteers spent hours carefully searching every room.

We found two of her cats beneath furniture in the living room. They had passed from smoke inhalation.

A third was found in a kitchen cupboard, having succumbed to injuries sustained during the fire.

It was heartbreaking news to deliver, but Jennifer shared that having answers brought her some measure of peace and closure.

Meanwhile, we continued trying to catch the cat in the garage. We tried every bait we could think of. We adjusted trap placements. We brainstormed new approaches. Nothing was working.

Finally, two days ago, two of our volunteers went in with a net.

Thanks to quick thinking, great communication, and a little bit of luck, they caught her.

Today, we are grateful that Jennifer has been reunited with two of her cats and has answers about three others. One cat is still missing, and we remain committed to finding her and bringing her home.

While we don't typically assist with owned cats, we know that our trapping experience can be useful in situations like this. We were honored to help Jennifer during an incredibly difficult time.

There is a local fundraiser this Friday to help Jennifer as she rebuilds after the fire. Information can be found in the photos. 🖤
