Meet Salvatore “Sal” Cassano, former FDNY Fire Commissioner and Citywide Tour Commander on 9/11.
Sal began his career as a firefighter in 1969 and went on to hold every rank in the FDNY, ultimately serving as the department’s 32nd Fire Commissioner. Following September 11, 2001, he played an instrumental role in rebuilding the department and helping carry its mission forward.

In MEMORY, Sal shares his story—from what inspired him to become a firefighter to his firsthand account of 9/11, the pride he feels in being part of the FDNY, and his hopes for the future.
His story reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of those who answered the call on September 11 and the importance of carrying their stories forward for generations to come.

Today, we welcomed the Bay to Brooklyn Memorial Bicycle Ride to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

For the third time, this dedicated group of firefighters, first responders and supporters has crossed the country by bicycle to honor the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

The group previously made the journey for the 10th and 20th anniversaries of 9/11. This year, they set out from the San Francisco Bay Area on August 2 to commemorate the 25th anniversary, carrying the memory of the 343 with them every mile of the journey.

Today, their ride brought them to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, where we were honored to welcome them and share in their commitment to .

Thank you to the Bay to Brooklyn riders for making this extraordinary journey and for continuing to honor the legacy of those who gave everything.

Meet 11-year-old Piper, the featured guest in HERO, the third video in the “Remembering September 11th” series from OOPA'S World of Words.

Piper’s grandfather, Robbie Whitmore, responded to the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, as a member of the Alexandria Fire Department. In HERO, Piper and her mom, Ashley Whitmore Utermahlen, share their family’s personal connection to September 11 and why they believe it is so important to give children the tools to learn, ask questions, and understand the stories of those who served.

Created with families and educators in mind, the “Remembering September 11th” series provides age-appropriate educational videos, guides, and resources to help introduce young children to the events and legacy of September 11.
