Saving Grace Miniature Horse Rescue Saving Grace Miniature Horse Rescue (SGMHR) is a non-profit 501(c)3 public charity registered in the state of MI and funded solely on donations.

EIN # 47-1857785 My love for horses began as a child but it wasn't until I was an adult that I was finally able to have a horse of my own. Due to injuries sustained in an auto accident in 1999 I could no longer ride. It was then I started researching mini's and the rest is history... I was hooked. In 2003 my first 4 mini's came into my life and my adventures in the wonderful world of the miniature horse began. In 2004 I became a member of the Blue Water Miniature Horse Club (BWMHC) where over the years I have made some amazing friends and many wonderful memories. During my time with the BWMHC I was very actively involved serving on several committees and enjoyed every minute of it. I was the newsletter editor for 8 years (2004-2011). I also served on the board of directors as treasurer for 4 years (2008-2011). From 2007-2010 the club's fun shows were held at my farm...these are some of my greatest memories, spending time with amazing friends both old and new and our wonderful little horses. In 2009 I became involved with Chance's Miniature Horse Rescue (CMHR), first as a member then as a director at large. I became a foster home for this nationwide rescue in 2010 and since then I have fostered several horses. In May of 2010 I was asked to be treasurer for the rescue and I gladly accepted. As my passion for rescue grew I decided to make some changes and devote more of myself to making a difference in the lives of these little horses. So in December of 2011 I resigned my positions of treasurer and newsletter editor with the BWMHC to follow my heart which has led me on a amazing journey. I believe my time with both the BWMHC and CMHR along with the encouragement and support of my wonderful family and friends has prepared me to follow another dream....opening my own rescue! On September 17, 2014, Saving Grace Miniature Horse Rescue went from a dream I never thought possible to a reality!

WANTED: VOLUNTEERS!

REWARD: Absolutely no money, questionable working conditions, and the opportunity to be judged by miniature horses.😂

We've got a situation here at Saving Grace Miniature Horse Rescue!

Fall has arrived, winter is breathing down our necks, and our farm cleanup to-do list is officially OUT OF CONTROL!

We held an emergency staff meeting with the minis to discuss the situation.

🐴 Bam Bam volunteered to supervise.

🐴 Wiggs offered moral support.

🐴 The rest of the herd claimed they were on their legally required snack breaks.

So apparently, we're going to need some HUMAN help!

We're looking for a few good people willing to roll up their sleeves, get a little dirty, and help us tackle some much-needed fall cleanup projects before winter arrives!

🍂 Weekday AND weekend hours available!

🍂 No horse experience necessary!

🍂 No special skills required!

🍂 Come for a couple of hours or stay longer!

WHAT WE OFFER:

✅ Fresh country air (occasionally scented with manure).

✅ Free exercise (who needs a gym membership?).

✅ Tiny, furry supervisors who contribute absolutely nothing to the workload.

✅ The satisfaction of knowing you're making life better for rescued miniature horses.

All kidding aside, there is ALWAYS more work than hands at a rescue, and having a few extra volunteers would mean the world to us.

TRIVIA TUESDAY REVEAL! ✨

If you guessed B. Checkers & Auggie, you know our herd pretty darn well! ❤️

Both of these handsome guys have a condition called 'kyphosis', an abnormal curvature of the spine that can cause the back to appear rounded or “hunched.”

But there’s a whole lot more to these two than their backs!

💙 Auggie is 19 years young and has called Saving Grace home since 2018. We first spotted him in a Craigslist ad where someone was looking to **trade him for a milking goat.** 🐐😳

We reached out about him…and were completely ignored.

So, we had a friend inquire and offer cash instead of a goat.

Suddenly, they were interested. 🤦‍♀️

Our friend purchased him for us, and Auggie came to Saving Grace, where he has been living his best life ever since. ❤️

💙 Checkers is 15 years young. We purchased him at the Shipshewana Good Friday Sale in 2017, where he was in poor condition and very much in need of a fresh start.

After being rehabilitated, Checkers was adopted in 2019 and spent many happy years in his home alongside his best buddy, Pete. In 2026, both boys were returned to Saving Grace through absolutely no fault of their own, and Checkers once again became part of our herd. ❤️

And the best part?

Despite their kyphosis, this condition has had no impact on the quality of life of either of these boys. They are happy, loved, comfortable and doing just fine being Auggie and Checkers. 🥰

❓ TRIVIA TUESDAY

Today we're testing just how well you know our herd!

We have TWO minis here at Saving Grace with a condition called 'kyphosis'.

Kyphosis is an abnormal outward curvature of the spine that creates a rounded or “hunched” appearance along the back. The severity can vary greatly from horse to horse.

Thankfully, for our two minis who are affected, kyphosis has had no impact on their quality of life. ❤️ They are happy, comfortable and certainly don't seem to know there's anything different about them!

Hi. It’s Molly.

I needs to tell you guys something.

I gots the Cushings.

I don’t know what the Cushings is.

I asked my human if it goes away...she said no.

Well THAT seems unfair.

It all started because I had some little seizures.

They were really short. Less than one minute.

I thought I was okay.

But my human got scared.

So she called the doctor.

I said I did NOT need a doctor.

Nobody listens to me.

Then the doctor came.

She looked at me.

She listened to me.

She touched me.

And then…

SHE POKED ME. 😳

With a NEEDLE.

And took some of my BLOOD!

I was using that.

They sent my blood away to get checked and that’s how they found out I gots PPID. The big people call it Equine Cushing’s disease.

My human tried to explain it.

She said there’s a teeny tiny part in my brain that helps tell my body what to do.

Mine is being naughty.

It tells my body to make too much of something called hormones.

I don’t know what hormones are.

But apparently mine need a TIME OUT.

So now I gots medicine.

Every. Single. Day...

and that is WAY too many days.

And because I am little, I can’t have the same medicine as the bigger horsies. Mine has to be specially made just for little ol’ me.

But guess what?!

Last $5 Friday you guys gave $160 for my medicines! ❤️

My human says that pays for a little more than THREE WHOLE MONTHS!

So THANK YOU! 🥰

But then this paper came.

It says…$576

I said, “What’s that?”

My human said, “Your vet bill.”

MY WHAT?!

Wait.

They came to MY house.

They poked ME.

They took MY blood.

And now I gots to give THEM $576?!

I don’t think so.

I don’t even have a job.

Or pockets.

My human says being cute does not pay vet bills.

I think she is wrong, so I am testing my theory on you guys. 😏

Can you help me pay my $576 vet bill?

I already did my part.

I got poked.

I gave them blood.

I takes my medicine.

And I’m being a very good girl.

As I turned the calendar to October this morning (yes, a day late! 😂), I was quickly reminded that our deadline for the 2027 “Where Are They Now?” Rescue Calendar is coming up FAST!

And we still need 6 more Saving Grace alumni submissions to make it happen! 🐴❤️

So, Saving Grace adopters…we’re calling on YOU!

If you’ve adopted one of our minis, we would absolutely love to feature them and show everyone what life after rescue looks like. Send us a recent HIGH-RESOLUTION LANDSCAPE photo along with a short update about how your mini is doing and what their happily-ever-after looks like.

📅 DEADLINE: OCTOBER 11!

We need those final 6 submissions by the deadline in order to move forward with creating and printing the calendar.

This project is extra special because not only do we get to celebrate our alumni and the wonderful families who gave them their forever homes, but 100% of the funds raised from calendar sales go directly toward the care of the minis here at Saving Grace. ❤️

$5 FRIDAY — MISS MOLLY NEEDS A HERO (OR A FEW!) 💜

Our sweet little Miss Molly has recently been diagnosed with PPID (Equine Cushing’s disease), and we’re hoping a few members of our amazing village will step up to help with her newest lifelong expense.

Recently, Molly had a few very brief seizures, each lasting less than a minute. That was enough to have us concerned, so we had our veterinarian come out for an exam and blood work.

Thankfully, her blood work looked good overall. The only abnormality was her ACTH level, which came back at 129, with around 60 considered normal for this time of year. This led to her diagnosis of PPID.

Miss Molly will now need pergolide every single day for the rest of her life. Because Molly is one of our dwarf minis, her medication needs to be specially compounded just for her.

Compounded pergolide: $41.75 per month, plus shipping.

That may not sound like a huge amount, but lifelong medications add another recurring expense to the many costs of caring for our sanctuary herd.

So this $5 Friday, we’re looking for Molly’s Heroes.

Could we find a few people willing to sponsor $5, $10 or even $20 a month toward Molly’s medication? Just a handful of monthly heroes could make sure her prescription is covered every month.

And if a monthly commitment isn’t possible, a $5 Friday donation will still help us start building a medication fund for her.

Miss Molly didn’t choose PPID, but she does have something pretty special on her side…

A whole village that loves these little horses. 💜

Recently, we’ve had an influx of adoption inquiries from all across the country. We’re truly honored that our little herd is capturing hearts so far beyond Michigan! ❤️

But we’ve also had quite a few questions about why we limit out-of-state adoptions to within approximately 500 miles of our rescue in Emmett, Michigan.

The answer is simple: our responsibility to our minis doesn’t end when they’re adopted.

Every horse that comes through Saving Grace will always be one of 'our' horses. We require an in-person meet & greet before adoption, bi-annual updates after adoption, and we reserve the right to conduct a welfare check if concerns ever arise.

Most importantly, if an adopter can no longer keep one of our minis—for any reason—that horse must be returned to Saving Grace.

Our 500-mile radius helps us make sure we can realistically remain involved and accessible throughout that horse’s lifetime. Sending a mini thousands of miles away would make it much more difficult for us to step in if they ever needed us again.

We know there are amazing homes beyond that 500-mile radius, and this policy isn't meant to suggest otherwise. It's simply about knowing our own limitations and making promises to our horses that we can actually keep.

Finding them a home is only part of our job. Making sure they’re safe for life is the rest. ❤️

You ALL nailed it!
The correct answer was B! 🎉

Minis can be more prone to obesity and metabolic problems, so “just a little extra” feed can actually be a BIG deal for those little bodies.

They may be small, but many minis are very efficient at using calories—which is unfortunate considering they’re also VERY talented at convincing us they haven’t eaten in approximately three weeks. 😂

👏 Great job, everyone! Clearly we have a pretty horse-savvy crowd around here!

Looks like we’ll have to step up our game for next Tuesday… 😏
