We have talked a lot about the increased breast cancer risk associated with alcohol use, but you might be curious to know just how many cisgender women are affected each year. So, we did the math.

Between 4-10% of breast cancer cases each year are thought to be due to drinking alcohol. We used the middle of that range—7%—and multiplied it by 281,550, the estimated number of new breast cancer cases in 2021.

That means that last year, in the U.S. alone, 19,709 breast cancer cases were linked to alcohol!

In our bio, we have listed links to the Liu et al. study that informed this post and the National Cancer Institutes webpage where we got the yearly estimate for 2021.

You might have heard that alcohol is a Group 1 carcinogen. But what exactly does it mean to be a Group 1 carcinogen? Well, in short, it means multiple respected international agencies have looked at years of robust scientific evidence and determined that all substances in this classification carry the highest cancer risk. That puts alcohol in the same category as arsenic, asbestos, and to***co (yikes!).

The good news is that the more we understand these risks, the more power we have to make changes to protect our health
