We're thrilled to announce a significant milestone in conservation efforts! 🌿🌟

Yesterday we allocated 160 acres of crucial habitat in White Pine County to safeguard the Monte Neva Paintbrush, a rare and critically imperiled species found exclusively in Nevada's hot spring environments.

The Monte Neva Paintbrush (Castilleja salsuginosa) is designated as critically imperiled and at risk of extinction. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, we - led by our Conserve Nevada Program- spearheaded a collaborative effort with federal, state, and nonprofit partners to prevent the species from the looming threat of extinction.

James Settelmeyer, Director of NDCNR, expressed his gratitude to our partners and the public for their unwavering support, highlighting the Conserve Nevada Program's pivotal role in cultivating a healthy and vibrant Nevada for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone involved in this crucial effort!

The Society for Range Management’s Nevada Section is accepting applications for Nevada Youth Range Camp scheduled June 16-22 at Berry Creek in the Schell Range, northeast of McGill, Nev. The application deadline is Tuesday, April 30.

Youth Range Camp provides high school students an opportunity to learn about Nevada’s desert and mountain rangelands and diverse ecosystems, while experiencing them firsthand. Students learn basic surveying and map reading, identification and importance of rangeland plants, evaluation of sagebrush and woodland ecosystems, wildlife surveying techniques, evaluation of stream health, and many other topics related to rangelands. While the camp is educational, it also offers an enjoyable, outdoor experience with activities such as swimming, fishing, hiking, volleyball, horseshoes, campfires and photography.

The cost to attend Range Camp is $250, which includes meals and camp activities. A letter of recommendation from an adult other than a parent, relative, or sibling must accompany the application. Forms and information can be found on the Nevada Youth Range Camp Website at https://nevada-section-society-for-range-management.square.site or by contacting Camp Director Ethan Mower at 775-726-3564 or [email protected]

The Carson City District has issued the Decision for the Pine Nut Mountain Herbicide and Seeding Project.

The Decision would allow BLM to implement vegetation treatments in targeted areas within and adjacent to the Pine Nut Mountain range up to a total of 15,500 acres. These treatments would occur within fuel breaks along major roads (approx. 6,500 acres) and in previously burned and degraded areas (approx. 9,000 acres). Treatment methods used will depend on site characteristics, condition, and need. Treatments may include herbicide application (aerial or ground) targeting invasive cheatgrass, and native vegetation seeding and/or planting.

The treatments would be implemented within the next 5–10-year period in phases consisting of 2,000-5,000 acres each and will typically occur during the fall and early winter.

The documents including a map have been made available for a 30-day public review and appeal period and are available on the project’s website at https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2030074/510
