Do you see what I see?

Leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens) are ambush predators, meaning that they sit and wait for prey to come to them. So, the art of blending in and staying perfectly still is very important for little Leo. Leopard frogs come in a variety of colors, such as bright green, olive green, brown, and yellow, and while Leo doesn't seem to blend in all that well to us humans, many of the insects Leopard frogs prey on are dichromatic. Yellows (Leo's skin color) and greens (leaf color) look relatively the same. So, Leo might not be as silly as we think!

Close your eyes and imagine a bear den... what does it look like? 🐻

A lot of us probably imagine a large, dark cave. Maybe a pair of glowing eyes glaring out. While a bear may hibernate in a cave, pop culture has created a misconception that this is the only place a bear may hibernate. Simply defined, a den is where a bear spends its winter hibernation. This may include rock crevices, hollowed and downed trees, hillsides, culverts, brush piles, under an abandoned home, and even a simple depression in the ground.

Every year, the bear center gathers caterpillars living on the milkweed inside the bears' habitat that are at risk of being trampled. We feed them fresh milkweed and allow them to grow in secure netted enclosures until they hatch from their chrysalides. We take part in the Monarch Watch tagging research to track their migration.
If you ever find a monarch with a sticker on its wing, do not try to remove the sticker. Instead, write down the code on the tag, the date, and the location, and report it online to Monarch Watch or the specific research program listed on the tag. If the butterfly is still alive, let it go safely! 🦋🌱
