Boundary Waters Connect

Boundary Waters Connect Connecting people and resources in ways that benefit Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness-edge communities Boundary Waters Connect sponsors Tuesday Group.

Tuesday Group is a community gathering that takes place on Tuesdays over the noon hour at the Grand Ely Lodge. We provide a space for people to come together and learn something new. We strive to feature speakers and topics relevant to northeastern Minnesota. Each week features a presentation with some time for community announcements at the top of the hour, and time for questions at the end of th

e hour. Tuesday Group presentations are typically offered in a hybrid model: both in-person and live online via Zoom. Recorded Tuesday Group presentations can be found on the Boundary Waters Connect YouTube channel. Boundary Waters Connect also produced a series of Why We Live Here videos which feature area residents discussing what drew them to relocate to northeastern Minnesota's wilderness edge communities. Boundary Waters Connect supports the Society Hall Workspace on the second floor of Northern Grounds coffee + wine bar. We invest in co-working in Ely, because it fosters community, entrepreneurism, and economic growth. Society Hall Workspace provides a space for work in the midst of infinite opportunities for outdoor recreation, bridging the gaps between work & play, between vacation & relocation.

We are excited to announce our new project: Wilderness Edge, a podcast for people who are curious about the communities on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

We are based in Ely, but we also look forward to featuring folks from Grand Marais, Orr, between, and beyond.

We invite you to give it a listen: https://wildernessedge.buzzsprout.com/

(Oh, and we are obsessed with this stop motion animation made by our collaborator Studio Vogl!)

Do you live in northeastern Minnesota? We're hosting a potluck and dance party with the goal of bringing people from around the region together. Specifically, we are collaborating with friends from Grand Marais to make it happen.

Join us tomorrow morning (Tuesday, May 12 from 7:30am to 10:00am) we will be meeting at the HUB for the next meeting in the Business SUCCESSion track of Ely for Ely. We'll be hearing from John Bennett and Aiden Opatz from the UofM Extension program about the data around Ely's economy.

Last month we started this conversation talking about our thoughts on the Ely economy-what is working and where we think things could change. Now we'll hear from the data and research to answer similar questions. Join the conversation, hear what John and Aiden have to say, and come back next month when we talk about a plan going forward.

We're honored that so many people have expressed interest in attending the Hello Neighbor, Let's Be Friends class tonight at the Ely Folk School, but we have reached capacity.

We look forward to talking with you about friendship-making, seeing you at other events around town, and continuing this journey and conversation together.

We encourage you to look at the resources on the Hello, Neighbor page at BoundaryWatersConnect.org (linked in the comments) and to set up a 1:1 coffee date with Lacey or Jess. We'd love to chat about Ely, making or deepening friendships, and all that is available to do around here.

This Thursday, April 23rd from 5pm-7pm, BWC and Potluck Kitchenware are hosting an event around making friends at Ely Folk School. Whether you're trying to make more friends, new friends, or create deeper relationships with your current friends, you're welcome at Hello Neighbor, Let's Be Friends!

We know it can be hard to manage authentic friendships or find the types of friends you want to have, so we created an event that will allow us to present some research and strategies about making friends and spend time getting to know others who also want to make more friends. There will be food provided by Boundary Waters Kitchen & Market so you won't even have to plan dinner for the night!

We'll see you there!

About once a quarter our Tuesday Group presentation features new Elyites and today was that day! We heard from 4 new Elyites: Riley Smith, Noelle Skubal (Skoobs), Derekah Kingery, and Becca Olson. All of these new Elyites have been in Ely for a while but came today to give a short introduction at Tuesday Group.

Although there are many ways to be introduced to Ely, Tuesday Group happens to be one of our favorites. As you meet people around town, encourage them to participate in Meet New Elyites (the next one is in July), sign up for a Hello Neighbor coffee date with Lacey or Jess, and come to an event.

Part of a thriving community is economic growth and resilience. Ely's entrepreneurial side is strong but that doesn't mean there aren't challenges and needs.

This month at Ely for Ely, we're starting the conversation about Business SUCCESS in Ely. What are the successes we're seeing? What are the challenges? What does our business community want and need?

We're here to listen and learn with the intent to find out what we, at BWC, can do to support our businesses in Ely. Join us for this conversation & help guide the work of BWC. We'll see you tomorrow morning at 7:30am at the Ely Area Community HUB on Miners Drive.
