ChesMont Astronomical Society

ChesMont Astronomical Society Official page of ChesMont Astronomical Society. Dedicated to observing - Located in SE PA. Who We Are:
ChesMont - we are avid astronomers!

Welcome to the only official Facebook presence of the ChesMont Astronomical Society! Our club members have numerous telescopes and routinely use them to observe the wonders of the night sky. In addition to observing deep sky objects (galaxies, globular clusters, comets, supernova, nebulas, etc.), we are a good group of folks that enjoy each other's company and share a common bond. Events/Education

:
ChesMont also hosts outreach events to share our hobby with the public. Our main event, held yearly in late summer/early fall, is Starfest. This is a wildly popular event with many satisfied attendees. At Starfest, CAS volunteers set up their own telescopes and the public is can view different objects in each of the telescopes on the observing field. We will be sure to post details about this event on this page, so make sure to follow us. We also have more informal events / star parties where we set up our telescopes and show the public the wonders of the night sky. All ChesMont public events will be posted in the events section on our page. Meetings:
All of our club meetings will be posted in the events section on our page. We hold meetings on the Sunday closest to the full moon in the Elverson, PA area. Topics of discussion range from across the spectrum of amateur astronomy interests. Here are some of the meeting topics and presenters we have been fortunate enough to host: world class opticians, NASA missions, equipment manufacturers, planetarium directors, observing planning, eclipse trip planning and experiences, observing trip reports, and our observers round table discussions where we plan out observing sessions, and much more. We have hosted guest speakers from all over the world! Membership:

Thank you to Natural Lands for hosting such a wonderful event. We were proud to be part of Stardust 2025. It was a fantastic evening, and we are looking forward to Stardust and Friday Night Lights this June!

The Comet - it’s not just a roller coaster at Hersheypark! You guessed it… had a fun night last night! Decided to go out locally to see the comet before it gets too dim. Had a nice time with a friend Marc. And while we were setting up, a car pulls up and said, Hey, are you looking at the comet!?!? Sure am! Would you mind if I look too? Sure thing! With that, we made a new friend Sandy. The comet was the big hit of the evening and Marc was able to take his first ever astrophotography picture! (Shared below). This was not the only object that we saw last night. We looked at Saturn and its edge on rings. We saw the blue color of Neptune. Enjoyed views of the Ring Nebula (M57), the globular cluster M13, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), and its companion galaxy M110. At one point, while we were trying to decide what to look at next, Sky Safari (app) alerted us that the Hubble Space Telescope was rising. We did our best to track it manually across the night sky in the eyepiece - but we all saw Hubble! Was a great night - despite the light pollution.

We wanted to take a moment and thank our speaker at tonight's meeting, Don Knabb. Don was gracious with his time and expertise. Don provided ChesMont with an enlightening presentation on all that the Astronomical League has to offer amateur astronomers. We are lucky to have Don as the Chair of the Mid East Region of the Astronomical League, but we are also luck to have Don as a member of our club. Thank you so much for enriching both our evening tonight as well as our future astronomy endeavors. We look forward to observing with you and completing some of the AL observing lists! https://www.astroleague.org https://www.explorescientific.com/pages/explore-alliance-ambassador-don-knabb?srsltid=AfmBOopixfeB8XO_rWOKqLKF8U3piPUT6aLIA4fbWodjp3sEGy7PBNJj

Our meeting starts at 6PM, but we have a social gathering from 5-6PM. Tonight, our speaker is Don Knabb, who will be presenting on the Astronomical League. There will also be lots of discussion on recent observing experiences, including the Northern Lights and the comet. Hope you can join us.
