Do you have just 90 minutes a month to help a child develop a love of reading?

The Family Reading Partnership of the Chemung Valley is looking for volunteers for our Read to Me program!

As a volunteer, you’ll visit a child care provider, read with children, and leave behind a bag of books for them to enjoy throughout the month. It’s a simple commitment that can have a lasting impact on a child’s literacy journey.

No teaching experience is required—just a love of books and a desire to make a difference.

There is something special about sharing a book together.

Through our Traveling Books program, Family Reading Partnership of the Chemung Valley volunteers visit family day care providers each month to read stories aloud and leave behind a collection of approximately 25 books for children to enjoy throughout the month.

When volunteers return with a new set of books, they bring more than just stories. They help build relationships. By visiting the same child care homes each month, volunteers, care providers, and children develop meaningful connections through reading, conversation, laughter, and learning.

Traveling Books currently partners with fifteen family day care providers affiliated with the Child Care Council of Chemung County, helping foster a love of literacy at an early age while creating memorable reading experiences for children.

This program is made possible through the generosity of the Anderson Foundation and Park Church, along with the dedication of children’s librarians, teachers, and volunteers who have shared their time and expertise to select books, train volunteers, and support young readers throughout our community.

Together, we are helping children discover the joy of books, one story at a time.

Summer reading doesn’t have to be complicated.

Research consistently shows that children who read just 4 to 5 books over the summer are more likely to maintain their reading skills and return to school ready to learn in the fall.

Those five books can make a big difference by:
• Preventing summer learning loss
• Building vocabulary
• Strengthening reading comprehension
• Increasing confidence
• Helping children start the new school year strong

A trip to the library, a visit to a Bright Red Bookshelf, or a few bedtime stories can help keep young readers engaged all summer long.

The challenge is simple: Read 5 books this summer!

What book is first on your child’s summer reading list?

Reading together creates moments that children remember for a lifetime.

Whether it’s a bedtime story, a favorite picture book, or a brand-new adventure, sharing books with children helps build imagination, connection, language, and a lifelong love of reading.

This week’s Question of the Day:
What are you reading with your children this week?

Share your current favorites in the comments below. We always love seeing the books bringing families together throughout our community.

Every book. Every child. Every home.

Josh Allen says his daughter’s favorite book right now is The Pout-Pout Fish.

Sounds like she already has excellent taste in books.

Now the real question is… how many times has Josh had to read it this week?

The Family Reading Partnership of the Chemung Valley was honored to hear from Logan as he presented his Eagle Scout Project to our Board.

Through his dedication and hard work, Logan organized book drives at his home and at Fresh Start Church, promoted the effort through his Scout troop, Facebook, and Coopers Plains BOCES, and collected an incredible 5,759 books for our community. In addition to the book drives, Logan built 10 new bookshelves to help expand access to books throughout the Chemung Valley.

The new bookshelves feature built-in storage, internal handles for easier transportation, and wider shelving designed specifically to accommodate board books. Logan also provided the Board with the project blueprints for future use and organized the painting of decorative rocks that can be used as book and paper weights.

This remarkable project represents 232 volunteer hours and brought together 20 adults and 23 youth volunteers working toward a common goal: putting more books into the hands of children and families.

We would also like to recognize that Logan is the son of longtime Board Member Missey Church. It has been wonderful to see his commitment to literacy and service make such a meaningful impact on our organization and community.

Thank you, Logan, for your leadership, generosity, and dedication to helping build a culture of literacy throughout the Chemung Valley. Congratulations on an outstanding Eagle Scout Project!

A big thank you to longtime Family Reading Partnership of the Chemung Valley volunteer Karen Nicolo for representing our organization at Finn Academy: An Elmira Charter School’s 6th Annual Farmers Market on Saturday!

Karen helped share information about our literacy programs and distributed more than 220 books to children and families attending the event. Every book placed into the hands of a child is an opportunity to inspire imagination, encourage learning, and foster a lifelong love of reading.

We are grateful for dedicated volunteers like Karen who help us bring books into the community and connect families with the joy of reading.

Thank you, Karen, for your continued commitment to literacy and for helping make this event a success!
