More Access. More Opportunity. More Elmhurst. 🚊🫶🏼

Reopening the Elmhurst LIRR Station isn’t just good for Elmhurst.

It’s a win-win investment that expands transit access for residents while creating new ridership and revenue opportunities for the MTA and LIRR.

Elmhurst is one of NYC’s most diverse neighborhoods. We deserve better access and opportunities.

Hey Elmhurst! 👋🏻

Meet one of our board members, Edison!

He has shared a few thoughts on why he’s a part of our mission.

“I chose to serve on the board of City Mission because Queens is my home. Growing up here my family frequented Elmhurst quite a lot, and I was always amazed at how many different cultures were prevalent here. My wife and I moved to Elmhurst a few years ago when we became friends with the other board members because we were so excited to see that this neighborhood was being served. From cleaning the streets, engaging with families, serving food in pantries, it gave so much hope to know that people were giving their time and energy to bring change. For me, joining the board meant being part of that change and lending a hand to start new initiatives that others may be dreaming of. “ - Edison, City Mission Board Member

Heyy Elmhurst!! 👋🏻

Meet City Mission Board Member, Arthur! He’s shared a little bit about why he’s a part of our board.

“I remember when I first moved to Elmhurst in 2020, I was introduced to the work of City Mission through its partnerships with local schools, the Family Boulevard Residence and churches like St. James and the Elm Church. I had never been particularly active in my local neighborhood in the past, but ever since the COVID pandemic and seeing local neighbors stepping up out of a desire to see a better neighborhood for all really stirred in me a desire to engage in the issues that affect Elmhurst. That’s why I wanted to be part of the board of City Mission so that I can help facilitate partnerships with different organizations to bring resources into our neighborhood: because it takes all of us in Elmhurst to love Elmhurst.” - Arthur, City Mission Board Member.

Every week in Elmhurst, Fundados lives out City Mission’s heart of empowering people to seek the well-being of Elmhurst.

Aya wakes up at 7am to pick up donated food, cooks with volunteers, and serves 50–100 unhoused neighbors each week with dignity and love. At the same time, Craig hires unhoused neighbors to help clean the streets of Elmhurst and deliver meals to local parks.

This is what community looks like. ❤️

Hey Elmhurst!!

We’d like you to get to know our board a bit better. Therefore, each board member will be sharing a bit about themselves & why they are a part of City Mission.

We’ll start with Trusty!✨👏

“I chose to join the work of City Mission after recognizing the significant needs within Elmhurst, Queens. As one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the country, Elmhurst faces a range of challenges, including homelessness, high poverty rates, poor sanitation, and the ongoing struggles of immigrants adapting to a new culture.

Despite being aware of these issues, I had grown up with a mindset of overlooking the needs around me—simply walking past them. Joining City Mission became a way for me to challenge that perspective, to open my eyes and heart to the realities of my community, and to actively contribute toward seeing the neighborhood flourish.” - Trusty Pei, City Mission Board Member

Today, City Mission NYC was proud to stand underneath the Elmhurst mural that our neighbors helped create while advocating for the reopening of the Elmhurst LIRR station.

This station was taken away from our community in the 1980s, yet the need for accessible transportation in Elmhurst has only continued to grow. Immigrant neighborhoods like ours once had stronger accessibility and infrastructure, but over time, many of those resources have slowly been taken away while our population continues to increase.

In 2013, an MTA survey projected that reopening the station would generate nearly 3,800 daily riders, showing overwhelming community support even over a decade ago. Today, that need is even greater.

Our neighbors are overcrowding the M and R trains every day, especially on weekends when service is often inconsistent and skips our neighborhood. Families, workers, students, and small business owners need more accessible and reliable transportation options.

Reopening the Elmhurst LIRR station is not just about transit. It is about investing in immigrant communities, supporting local businesses, improving accessibility, and giving dignity and opportunity back to neighborhoods that have too often been overlooked.

Thank you Congresswoman Grace Meng and Councilmember Shekar Krishnan for continuing to fight for Elmhurst and advocating for this station to return to our community.
