Today, City Mission NYC was proud to stand underneath the Elmhurst mural that our neighbors helped create while advocating for the reopening of the Elmhurst LIRR station.
This station was taken away from our community in the 1980s, yet the need for accessible transportation in Elmhurst has only continued to grow. Immigrant neighborhoods like ours once had stronger accessibility and infrastructure, but over time, many of those resources have slowly been taken away while our population continues to increase.
In 2013, an MTA survey projected that reopening the station would generate nearly 3,800 daily riders, showing overwhelming community support even over a decade ago. Today, that need is even greater.
Our neighbors are overcrowding the M and R trains every day, especially on weekends when service is often inconsistent and skips our neighborhood. Families, workers, students, and small business owners need more accessible and reliable transportation options.
Reopening the Elmhurst LIRR station is not just about transit. It is about investing in immigrant communities, supporting local businesses, improving accessibility, and giving dignity and opportunity back to neighborhoods that have too often been overlooked.
Thank you Congresswoman Grace Meng and Councilmember Shekar Krishnan for continuing to fight for Elmhurst and advocating for this station to return to our community.
