In partnership with the Elmhurst History Museum, DuPage County Stormwater Management (SWM) will offer the public a rare opportunity to take a tour of its Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility on Saturday, October 3rd. Tours will depart from the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Avenue in Elmhurst, via bus every 30 minutes from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Each tour will last approximately 2 hours. Cost for the tour is $20 per person, payable to the Elmhurst History Museum. Governor JB Pritzker has signed the Dark Sky Act (SB 3037) into law! ⭐️

Each year, artificial light at night contributes to the deaths of hundreds of millions of migratory birds in the U.S. by disorienting them during migration. It also disrupts nocturnal wildlife, alters ecosystems, interferes with human circadian rhythms, and wastes energy and tax dollars.

To address this, the newly signed law updates the Illinois Energy Efficient Building Act by incorporating national ANSI/IES lighting standards into the stretch code for commercial buildings. These standards promote outdoor lighting that improves visibility while minimizing glare, skyglow, and light trespass.

This new law is a reminder that protecting the environment isn't always about sweeping changes. Just using light more thoughtfully — directing it where it's needed, when it's needed, and reducing its impact everywhere else — can have an impact, too.

The City of Elmhurst’s Development Planning and Zoning Committee will be discussing a possible new Environmental Commission on Monday night, August 10, at 7 p.m. Please consider sending written comments and/or attending the meeting in person to demonstrate your support.

A Sustainability Commission could assist City staff with research, comparing other municipalities’ best practices, measuring progress and incorporating baseline metrics, providing recommendations with a focus on improving policy and saving money, applying for grants and other funding opportunities, and educating the community.

Many issues the City deals with have environmental components. Examples include the waste/recycling contract; tree preservation; new development and its impacts on clean air, soil contamination, lighting and wildlife; electricity aggregation; water usage; and the need for more community-wide outreach in order to create a more sustainable community.
