Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network

Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network EWAN is here to provide a bridge to better times. Many years later, EWAN has grown.

Whether it's due to job loss, illness, divorce, or death in the family, Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network provides emergency assistance to individuals and families in times of crisis. In 1997, three women working in local churches saw a need to assist individuals and families who came to the churches' doors requesting help. They say the need to ensure that the churches' allocated funds for "walk

-in" assistance were being used to help those truly in need and to take some of the responsibility for making those decisions off of the ministers and church staff. It continues to be supported by 30 "covenant" churches, as well as local businesses, service organizations, and many generous individuals. After an intake process, EWAN is able to offer clients help with rent, utilities, car repair, some medical bills, as well as food and gas vouchers. We partner with the Immaculate Conception Church food pantry and the First United Methodist Church clothes closet to help clients with food and clothing needs.

Elmhurst households who are "Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed" are the ones who fall between the cracks of support services. ALICE households represent men and women of all ages and races who are working but unable to afford the basic necessities of housing, food, child care, health care, and transportation due to the lack of jobs that can support basic necessities and increases in the basic cost of living. 300+ Families Served 💜

We were grateful to be part of the Elmhurst Resource Collaboration & Roots and Wings // Alas y Raices, NFP Back-to-School, Resource & Health Fair on August 15!

Together, community partners served more than 300 families, providing health, education, human services, and connections to valuable community resources.

Families from School Districts 205, 100, and 2, as well as Bensenville, Elmhurst, and surrounding communities, came together to access information and support all in one place.

We’re proud to have been part of this collaborative effort and grateful to everyone who made the day possible! 🤝💜

For 11 years, 'Cue for a Cause brought our community together for great food, friendly competition, and—most importantly—to help local neighbors facing unexpected hardship.

As Labor Day weekend approaches, as most of you know, we will not be holding 'Cue for a Cause this year. After 11 wonderful years, we made the difficult decision to bring the event to an end.

So, before the weekend that became such a special tradition in Elmhurst arrives in a few weeks, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you. 🥰

Thank you to the volunteers who gave their time, the sponsors who supported us year after year, the teams who fired up their smokers, and everyone who came out to enjoy the event and support EWAN. 💜

Together, we turned a barbecue competition into a lifeline for local families—and created a pretty special Elmhurst tradition along the way.

While 'Cue for a Cause has come to an end, EWAN’s work is far from over. We are still supporting local families going through difficult times, and we look forward to what’s ahead.

THANK YOU, Elmhurst, for 11 incredible years of neighbors helping neighbors. 💜 And stay tuned—there’s more to come!

Who is Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network here to help? Our neighbors. 💜

If you’re facing a difficult season, EWAN provides compassionate, confidential assistance to help individuals and families get back on their feet - from help with rent and utilities to food, car repairs, prescriptions, dental care, and more. We also connect people with other community resources when we can’t provide the assistance directly.

You may be eligible for EWAN assistance if you:
• Have been an Elmhurst resident for at least 90 days
• Have a child in an Elmhurst school
• Belong to a partner church in Elmhurst

Since 1997, EWAN has been part of the Elmhurst community, helping our neighbors through unexpected challenges and providing a bridge to better times.

That’s what EWAN is all about, neighbors helping neighbors. 💜
