“Research has found that teachers tend to judge math mistakes more harshly among girls and students of color and are more likely to attribute those students’ errors to lack of innate ability. Teachers who believed that gender inequality was no longer a problem were especially likely to penalize female students’ work… So girls could be receiving more implicit messages about not belonging in math classrooms.”

Gender gaps that had largely closed before COVID are widening again. Multiple measures are “giving flashing warning signs that there's something big happening here.”

“At the very moment that Governor Greg Abbott was signing his deeply controversial voucher legislation, voters were rejecting the same education culture wars that Abbott et al have stoked relentlessly in order to justify said school vouchers. Indeed, at a time when the GOP is essentially telling its own voters to abandon their schools, those voters said ‘no thanks.’”

“What began at the local public school level moved to the public library level. Book bans, overtaking of boards, and cruel budgetary slashes have played out precisely as anticipated back at the beginning of the rise in censorship in 2021, despite claims by book banners that they were simply ‘curating appropriate’ books in their local schools. We knew pretty quickly that that wouldn’t be the end of the ride, either. The goal was–and is–dismantling and defunding public institutions.”

Three states floating legislation this year that would shutter their state libraries. None passed–but we still must act to protect these institutions.

“The anti-democratic movement has been building over the past several decades, and this movement is intent on capturing the levers of power in the American system, destroying the institutions that have sustained our democracy, and stripping women and girls, among other groups, of our rights.”

Everyone seemed to be trying to make a buck.

The “2/3 of students are not reading a grade level” claim is one of the most powerful recurring claims in the media.

Despite ample evidence to the contrary and repeated clarifications from many educators and scholars, media characterizations of student reading proficiency continues to be misrepresented.

The RWB Take: There have been extreme cuts all across our federal government, but not enough attention is being paid to how these cuts will affect children all over the country.

This is news suburban women can't ignore.

"A library is a focal point, a sacred place to a community; and its sacredness is its accessibility, its publicness. It’s everybody’s place."

– Ursula K. Le Guin, in a 1997 speech celebrating the renovation of Portland’s Multnomah County Library

“The discretionary budget slashes a long list of Department of Education programs, but it starts, significantly, with a $60 million increase in funding to charter schools.”

“The daily ramping up of authoritarianism by the Trump regime is distressing and daunting. And we’re seeing the impact of attacks on Illinois’ public schools, where federal funds are being slashed for everything from HVAC improvements to local foods in school cafeterias to National History Day. But there is also resistance taking place at all levels—including protecting public schools and public school students—that we must celebrate and build on.”

“Blythe and other Head Start providers in Illinois are concerned about the future of the 60- year-old federal program that serves children from birth to 5. Almost $500 million flowed from the federal government directly to Illinois Head Start providers during fiscal year 2024.”

Over 28,000 Illinois kids could have child care services disrupted if the Trump administration cuts funding for Head Start, a federal program that provides free child care to low-income families.

“The office of English Language Acquisition was responsible for allocating $890 million in funding to schools through Title III and oversight into programs such as the Native American and Alaska Native Children in Schools grants to help native children learn English alongside indigenous languages, the National Professional Development grants program to address the bilingual educator shortage, and the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition, an online resource with data, research, and best practices for schools to support English learners.”

In March, the Trump administration’s Education Department cut staff in an office that supports 5 million English learners nationwide. Now, a group of Democratic lawmakers are demanding the department reverse recent changes, calling them an “an outright attack” on students.
