FEMA CERT Course Unit 7 Light Search & Rescue. Practicing lifting with levers and fulcrums, and patient lifting with a blanket carry. Everyone did a great job!

Tonight several of our members attended a Skywarn storm spotter training hosted by Cheektowaga CERT and presented by the National Weather Service.

The SKYWARN Storm Spotter Program was created by the National Weather Service (NWS) to improve warning services. The NWS needs real-time reports of hail size, wind damage, flash flooding, heavy rain, tornadoes, and waterspouts to effectively warn the public of inclement weather. Even as new technology allows the NWS to issue warnings with more lead time, spotters will always be needed as links between radar indications of severe weather and ground truth. Storm Spotter volunteers serve as severe weather spotters for the NWS and local emergency management programs, and generally have two things in common - an interest in the weather and a desire to serve their community.

Today, the Elma C.E.R.T. team joined the Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup to celebrate the 2026 International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19th at the Seaway Trail Center Beach. A remarkable 185 pounds of debris and trash were collected, making a significant impact in keeping the beach clean. The Elma C.E.R.T. Team collaborates with a variety of local organizations to enhance public safety, disaster readiness, and community resilience.

Members of Elma CERT participated in the National Beach Cleanup Day picking up trash, metal, and debris from the beach. We collected 186 pounds of trash today. Just another way we support the community.
