At our last visit to Guatemala, club members brought 14 instruments that were donated by members or friends. Many of the instruments were from years past… dating back to grade school. Thank you giving your instruments new life… to kids… wanting to enjoy the gift and magic of music.

Serving Communities Around the World
Another great Comon Hope adventure included, building a home, enjoying the beauty and the people of Guatemala. Our Elmbrook Rotary Team spent a week volunteering with Common Hope last month.

Celebrating July 4!

Today, July 4th, 2024, America celebrates its 248th Independence Day, marking the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The nationwide celebrations will include diverse activities from parades and fireworks displays to family gatherings. As the country celebrates its iconic history, the day also serves as a reminder of the nation's resilience during challenging times and the importance of upholding human rights and social justice. So, in the spirit of unity, resilience and freedom symbolized by our national flag, don your best red, white and blue, and participate in the revelries of this significant day. Celebrate Independence Day and commit to creating a brighter and more inclusive future. Happy Fourth of July!

2024 Wellpoint Community Garden

On June 4th, Wellpoint Care network launched their 2024 vegetable and flower Community Garden season. Children from St. Margaret Mary School were in attendance along with representatives Jack Nelson and Bill Selzer from the Elmbrook Rotary Club, and Wellpoint Staff were in attendance.
The group was welcomed by Alex Williams and the Wellpoint Garden Team. The Team recently completed 9 raised planting beds, three of them set for kids and six taller beds that are accessible for walkers and wheelchairs. Thank you, Bed Builders; Jack Nelson, Tom Curl, Thomas Steinbach, Kerri Richlen, Mark Thurner, and Bill Selzer were thanked for their hard work and craftsmanship. Blessing Clark from Wellpoint was also a member of the construction crew.
The activities included:

The dedication of three raised beds, in recognition of the Elmbrook Rotary Club for their dedication and support of the Wellpoint Care Community Garden, along with Jack Nelson and Bill Selzer for their involvement in this project. Permanent metal plaques will be installed on three of the beds.
Children colored pictures of flowers and plants, then planted annual flowers in the new beds.

The Community Garden Team looks forward to the completion of the MMSD project, and development of in ground garden plots, and a Peace Garden giving staff and residents a tranquil place to enjoy.

Common Hope Guatemala - Where there is hope, there is a pathway forward!

Over the years, Elmbrook Rotary has been supporting Common Hope in Guatemala by sponsoring students, building homes and providing other health and education related services.
The Common Hope Mission… promotes hope and opportunity in Guatemala through:

- Support and encouragement to help Guatemalan students graduate from high school.
- Construction of homes for families in need with the essentials of clean water and electricity.
- Providing medical preventative care, dental and prenatal services.
- Family development programs offering legal aid, and parenting programs.

Guatemala has a 69% literacy rate, and a 18,6% high school graduation rate with 1/3 of adults never attending school. With the mission of Common Hope, Guatemalan students are twice as likely to work in a formal job, have a 53% improved job class over their parents, and female graduates earn 47% more that female non-graduates. Graduates are 50% more likely to report being in good health, and 90% are optimistic about achieving a higher standard of living.
