We had a big group this morning at Blue Hill Heritage Trust's Meadowbrook property in Sedgwick! Downeast Audubon co-hosted with the Trust and had Laura Suomi-Lecker from Ag Allies lead a bird walk that concentrated on learning about grassland species, in particular the magnificent Bobolink. We were delighted with the antics of several pairs and loved listening to their R2D2 songs!

Breakfast with the Birds- Last Sunday morning was a bit chilly to begin with but things warmed up after a breakfast of warm coffeecake and mimosas on the deck! We got a few nice looks at warblers and the Blackburnian really showed off nicely for us.

Saturday was a beautiful morning of birding on the Partridge Cove Trail in Lamoine! Under the leadership of Jon Sargent, DEA birders saw 38 species, ranging from eagles and hawks to a winter wren and several sapsuckers. A high point was an up close look at a female pileated woodpecker foraging.

Lake Alamoosook was at its beautiful best on Friday morning as the DEA paddlers put their canoes and kayaks in the water. The resident eagle made several appearances and 27 others species joined him for an impressive list of 28! Paddling along the shoreline, the songs of warblers made a gorgeous day even better!

Twelve birders meet up at Scott's Landing at 5:13 am to witness the dawn chorus. James Longo was our able guide. We identified 36 species including 9 warblers. Flocks of Yellow-rumps flew overhead, bringing that count to 64. A Double-crested Cormorant flew by carrying nesting material and a Scarlet Tanager sang from a treetop. Two osprey challenged each other at the empty nest platform on Old Ferry Road and then flew off. Were they courting or claiming territory?

A chill was still in the air this morning but we got some nice views of birds in the sunshine on our Caterpillar Hill walk. Tree Swallows are very happy here and bluebirds are nesting with young chicks already. Warblers are starting to arrive and set up territories. It was a beautiful morning to be out! The morning was chilly but beautiful for DEA's first bird walk of the season at Sieur de Monts in Acadia on Friday. Racing clouds indicated the strong winds as participants strained to hear any bird song. Although the final list was respectable, birds were scarce! As the saying goes, however, it was better than a day at work! Bird photos: Karen Littlefield

Out of the 19 bird houses we checked yesterday, five were occupied by bluebirds! They are doing really well in our area in part because of Downeast Audubon's Bluebird Trail. Of course, each nest is unique but all are made with either bits of hay, pine needles, or both. And some females weave in a feather or two. Bluebird eggs typically take 12 to 14 days to hatch after the female begins incubation. While the female lays one egg each day (usually 3–6 in total), she typically waits until the final egg is laid before she starts sitting on them full-time, ensuring all the chicks hatch within hours of each other. Not all bluebird eggs are blue: about 5% are white!
