When Fear Becomes Joy

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." — Luke 2:8-11

Throughout the year, there are events that rock our lives. Events that happen in the world and then events that happen in our lives. Sometimes these events happen all at one time and suddenly striking us with fear. Fear of the future, fear of people, and even fear of death.

And these unsuspecting shepherds right here just experienced one of these events. Light invades the darkness of the night, and an angel appears to them. They are struck with fear. But from the light comes a calming voice. The angel delivers a message of joy, not fear. The message is about a Deliverer who delivers men from the greatest fear — fear of death.

So today, if there is an event in your life that is striking you with fear, remember to fear not. We have a Savior. He was born in the city of David, and he was born, lived, and died to take away all our fears and to give us great joy.

DO THIS: Fear not.
PRAY THIS: God, rule over my fears and give me greater joy.

He's God Of The Details

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. — Luke 2:1-7

This is the only recorded account of the birth of Jesus in the Bible. And the details are stunning. It appears that the most powerful man in the Roman Empire was demonstrating his power by the demand of a worldwide census. But a greater power is at work. Caesar Augustus was not dictating this moment — God was. This is because God is the ruler of every detail, even the most finite details. Old Testament predictions about this event are not in short supply. Here are just eight of them that coincide with this moment declared hundreds of years before it happened. The probability that any single person would satisfy these eight prophecies was just 1 in 10 to the 17th power.

Here they are:
1. Micah 5:2 — The place of birth as Bethlehem.
2. Isaiah 7:14 — The virgin birth of a boy.
3. Genesis 3:15 — A seed that would be human and divine.
4. Micah 5:2 — A ruler from Israel is yet to be born.
5. Isaiah 9:6-7 — A man from David's lineage.
6. Isaiah 11:1 — From the lineage of Jesse.
7. 2 Samuel 7:16 — Lead a kingdom that would never end.
8. Jeremiah 23:5 — A new king that will reign justly and execute righteousness.

Now, if you wonder what real power and influence look like, it looks just like Jesus. Because God is the supreme ruler of every detail. Even over the demands of one of the greatest Ceasars who ever lived.

ASK THIS: Are you letting God rule all the details?
DO THIS: Let him reign.
PRAY THIS: God, reign over all things in my life.

A Royal Gathering

In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. — Luke 1:39-41

What you have right here is one of the great royal gatherings of all time. Two divinely appointed men meet in the womb. God designed them, predestined for a plan, and named them with this in mind long before they were seeds in a womb. Don't let anyone ever tell you that life begins at birth. Life begins when God determines it. And Elizabeth and Mary were carriers of God's intent whose respective wombs carried the highest of royalty. Both are pregnant and cousins, and still so different. One is young. One is old. One is married. One is not. One carries a prophet. One carries a Savior. Each boy has taken predetermined names. One is called John. The other is called Jesus. And the strangest of things, the baby called John, whose name is not yet spoken by his father Zechariah, knows the Savior has just entered the room. How about that? A baby in a womb acknowledges life in another womb.
These two men are about to turn the known world upside down.

They would crash against culture. They would perform incredible miracles. They preached a profound message. And then, finally, one would save the world from sin. Salvation would come to all humanity by a king who became human. And on the eve of Christmas, they had a little celebration in their mothers' wombs.
