When the GCS Boys’ Lacrosse team won the MIAA “C” Championship this year, the celebration was extra-special for Head Coach Jim Murphy and Head of the Middle School Kevin Boland, who was Jim’s first lacrosse coach as a child and when he was a GCS student. Mr. Boland is still on the sidelines assisting our boys’ lacrosse teams and Mr. Murphy now teaches humanities in the Upper School. What a special full-circle moment for two exceptional teacher-coaches!

When Gabby Tharkur '14 returned to GCS to share her experiences with our Upper School during a recent Forum Career Talk, she was happy to have humanities teacher Ed Conroy "interview" her. "Mr. Conroy made American Lit fun during one of my most challenging years in high school," Gabby said. "That made a world of difference for me." Creative and engaging educators like Mr. Conroy are crucial to our integrative approach to the humanities in Upper School, ensuring students acquire the abstract thinking, research, writing, and seminar skills that will be essential to their future success.

Jo Banner, longtime Lower School library assistant, will be retiring this year after 35 years (!) of service to GCS. We asked Angela Horjus Walker, Lower School librarian and Mrs. Banner’s partner-in-crime for some very clever Halloween costumes, about her colleague: “You know the saying, ‘When I count my blessings, I count you twice?’ Well, twice and tenfold could never properly express how much [we] care for you!” We will certainly miss Mrs. Banner’s friendly face in the Manor House library, and wish her all the best.
